A lot of the time it's to keep him from being aggressive. Sometimes it's to keep him from developing all of the bad male habits. Other times it's because someone doesn't want to share their blood lines. It would be hard to guess the reason, it's usually easier to ask the person that had him cut. I know that it's not that easy this time, but perhaps someone else has a better answer.

Plottpappaw, How bout it?! Any update on the new hound? I hunted with a dog of that strain last weekend (looked exactly like the hound previously pictured) and really took a liking to him he did extremely well on a bobcat and treed like a SOB!! I was told he is hell on a bear too. Anyways just wanted to see how it was going and what you thought of it so far. Thanks DC.

Mike Leonard wrote:The dog sound very similar to a well known strain of dogs that is being used by US Wildlife Service Hunters in California, the dogs go back to the hounds of Govt. hunter Boone Shockley, I know several of these little high tan dogs ended up in North East, New Mexico and they were bred up by a man in Califonia whose first name is Alan. I have seen a few of these dogs in action and they were really nice cat and bear dogs.
Boone Shockly was not a Govt. hunter. He is still alive here in Calif. hunting dogs at 83 years old. His line of dogs came from him breeding a B&T female to a Bob Marosok stud years ago. That are some of the best bobcat / beardogs to have treed game in Calif. the Alan you are talking about is Alan Ksiazek that breeds the Matthes hounds and has crossed them with the Boone dogs They are still some nice dogs

here's the first real update. took him on training run with my dogs and he done awesome. run with my dogs opening on track and treeing a lil and walked a good bear a long ways. he 's got a ton of grit and seems almost a natural at bears. he'll make a nice dog. i'm afraid he may be a lil to grab happy on a bear. shows no fear on a mean walking bear. doesn't tree real hard and sounds like a cur.

Don't give up on your pup yet. He didn't have all that natural grit just for a flash in the pan moment. It doesn't hurt him to sit back and consider things just a bit. Some dogs crank it up in those circumstances while others shy away. I had a pair of 6 month old pups that saw their first lion in a trap. He was a very large tom, and mucked out all of the dogs, even ended up killing one. My male pup just wanted to fight lions from that moment on, while my female wasn't too sure that she wanted any more lion meat. We kept taking her, and she went back to trailing, but would stay back and look for the lion before getting in on the tree. She seemed to be making sure that she knew exactly where that lion was before getting any closer. She turned into the absolute best locator I have ever been around! She also went back to wanting to get hold of lions at about 3 years old. Keep taking that dog, and work on building his confidence. He could come around, and he might never want another bear, but today isn't necesarily the end of the story. Good luck!

When you own a Boone dog you will be on a first name bases with your vet. !!!! I guess you will find out now for sure if it is out of Boone's line of dogs. Never seen a Boone dog that didn't have a scar or two or three

i watched the whole thing happen. sitting their trying to video it. he kept running in and grabbing it while moving on through and it was almost like the bear had him timed. beats all i ever seen he never eased into grabbing one. first time i turned him on one he was running in and grabbing it with no regard for safety. first time i ever seen him quit or back off but he was eat up pretty bad this time. only come out of his house to eat today.

In my business I like to say that some people get hurt and others get injured. To me broken bones, sprains, torn ligiments, lacerations and so on are all injuries. Now when that pain and those injuries start messing with your head, that's hurt. I myself have never been hurt. I have however had plenty of injuries.
Frank Newsom always says pain is mind over matter. "If you don't mind, it don't matter"! If I had to guess by what I know of these little dogs. I'd have to say your dog is only injured. Especially since he only came out to eat today. That just tells you how much it took to make him check out. Like you mentioned earlier, they have no reguard for their saftey. Hang in there and he'll make you a hound. If not he'd likely make someone a heck of a cat hound. JMO

thanks guys for the info. i'm gonna give him a couple weeks to get healed up and take him again. i like him alot he's a dang kamakazi though. gives the bears a fit. in my lack of experience with hounds from that part of the world it really bothered me. all but one of my dogs are mixed but are all local best of the best crosses.
shorty i watch you on tv all the time. my grandparents are huge fans of the pbr and can tell you anything you wanna know bout bull fighters and bull riders. they are to elderly to make it out to the close events anymore. i beleive my pap has your autograph on a cow bell. it may be a wild comment but i really appreciate ya'lls job cause its the most excitment i see out of my pap since his heart attack and having to miss the last event in south carolina due to having his heart attack the week of the event.
back on subject. is this dog ever gonna learn respect of the bear to at least not be used for a bowling ball or look like a pin cushion. i do majority of my own vet work to a certain point. all of mine are pretty rough but have enough sense to grab and not get too banged up and usually only get cosmetic damage or rolled around. this pup and my sake dog are pretty similar in they are a lil over aggressive but sake picks his shots. i guess the pup will just have to learn quit or die.

Respect for a bear is something most Boone dogs don't have ! I have owned two of them in the past, And have watched both of them go one on one with bears more then a time or two. And I'm not talking running in and bite the bear but rolling down the hill locked up with the bear then grab a mouth full of butt and go 10 to 12 feet up the tree before she would let go. they are tuff bear dogs and just as good on bobcat. You will not be getting any good pic. of bayed up bears with a good Boone dog in your pack they just don't let them rest on the ground it will have to climb if it wants rest
