I will be out of town when you pass through otherwise I'd say lets hook up for a quick hunt...bummer. You're taking that pups sister to Colorado...is he staying here as well?

Steve,
How many of the pups in that litter have the blue eyes? I'd be a little worried about that trait and the probability of passing it on. Not that it affects how a hound hunts in any way, but unless we're hunting Catahoulas, it seems to me that a tree hound should have deep, dark eyes. I guess its not a problem in the Majestic breed standard, but in the Gascon standard, that blue eye would be an automatic disqualification. There is a well known Gascon breeder who used to advertise some and that blue eye was pretty common in his line of hounds. That kept quite a few serious Gascon guys from going back to his hounds.
Other than that, those are some fine looking pups.

Steve..
Like Larry mentioned there are problems that often come associated with the blue eyes... Chalk eye,Glass eye ,watch eyes or what ever you want to call them... in the last 50 years I have seen some of them in several different breeds and strains. so where it came from is a matter for someone with a lot of cash and wanting to do a lot of testing of genetics.
the main thing I seen over all this time was hounds that were either one glass eye or 2 often were either unilaterally or bilaterally deaf. some of them adapted wonderfully to the situation and made very decent hounds in the woods. why that happened I have only a slight Idea.
the first I seen was a big 1/2 walker 1/2 redbone that Roy Crissip had...and you had better not approach him from the deaf side. wonderful cooner.
the next was an inbred blue dog that Donnie Dewitt had 2 blue eyes and stone cold deaf.
I have had a couple that were deaf in one ear with a blue eye on the same side... needless to say there was a problem with handling them.
I certainly would steer clear of breeding one that has the blue eye.. and do all kind of checks to see if one has hearing problems before letting some one have one for any reason.
I think that if you read the articles written by J.Richard McDuffie in the Full Cry's of the past you can pick up a lot of good insight on the matter.

I agree with the Blue Eyes in Some of the Mearle Genetics.. And Yes I was Concerned When they Pop up out of the "Blue" .. So I did indeed do alot of Research on the Blue Eye..
"But thru all of it I have not found a Link between the Blue Eyes of mine and the Noted Link of the Blue Eye of the Mearle Genetics and Deafness " (Mostly found in Catahula's, Leopard Curs and Mearle Cattle Dogs which have closer Genetics)
Yes I wish the DNA Testing was Afordable to find out Just Where they Came From Exactly.
If it is Coming from the "Mountain Music" and Older "Smokie River" lines then I have not found any Record of Deafness Related in their Blue Eye's.. But then Again Some Fokes Don't talk about things like this in the Old Articles .. LOL
Once Again this Breeding is such an Absurd Total Outcross of 2 different Unrelated lines of Bloodhound 31.25% total, Treeing Walker 25%, English Coonhound 25% and Very Old Bluetick 18.75% Lines. All of these Crosses are within the F1 and F2 Generation in this Breeding.. The Only Known Link in Genetics is between the English and Bluetick F1 cross in the 8th, 9th and 10th Generation to "Mountain Music Blue"
Believe me I'am Watching for anything that May Go Astray.. The Father of these Pups was 10 months old at the time of Breeding and I have Never had a Pup doing (or a 2 year old) what he is Doing .. So My thought was lets go ahead and give him a test breeding and See what he Produces . First I really didn't believe he was furtial at 10 months old.. and he surprised me their !! lol
Second He did not have Blue Eyes but 2 of his Siblings did from the F1 cross of the English Coonhound and My Big Redtick "Bluetick" Hammer, 1 with 2 blue eyes and 1 with a single blue eye out of a 11 pup litter which works out to be 18% .
Now Maggie the Walker/Bloodhound who I Bred "Boo" (Sire to these Pups) to has had 64 pups and has Never produced Blue Eyes, then in this Litter produced 11 pups yet another 18% (2) with blue eyes..
It has Me Totaly Bafold to Say the Least..
Boo is Scheuled to be Bred again Next Spring then He will not be Bred again untill his pups are Proofed out.
If their are any signs of Deafness or Sight Loss this Line will be Turminated Quickly
Now As far as "Selective Hearing" Goes ...lol Their alttle better than a Walker...........

yes--- a lot of them got buried.. the one I seen that Donnie DeWitt had was out of grand son and grand daughter of Smokey River blue Pete and Haslouer's Mary...
one of the ones I had was carrying aa lot of the old Smokey River line way before the "new" Diamond Jim stuff
just do your checking

I will keep Checking !!!!
I Just wish DNA was alot further along for the Avj. Breeder..
This stuff of just Knowing the parentage is for the Birds

yes the guessing on parentage has been a big problem for years... a couple of fellows that hollered about "slipped papers" were the ones that did it as much as anyone...
just a few short years back that one fabled houndsman launched an attack on John Vanderbeck and Jim Bartley in the columns because they supported DNA .... I sure wonder why???
LOL
If the truth was ever known there most likely was a lot of dogs that got used that were a far cry from true hounds... another thing was that some of the fabled "houndsmen" never failed to promote their selves.
I sure hope that one can make the proper decisions in breeding for the future of hunting hounds.

Well Steve you have found my weak spot. When it comes to hounds or cars size does matter

. I have to start sweet talk my girlfriend about having one majestic around. There will be a day when first majestic touches the finnish soil if i can help it (and the mrs is ok with it). Hans you need to get one female on your kennel so we can have some pups around here, but don't hurry because it's a year long project to over talk finnish females. We are going on a size of a drever and two monts from here it's beagle so you can do the math.
