Yes the garmin map and the onx maps are very similar on the handheld. Sounds like a great day rowdy! I ran a nice Tom bobcat today, dogs got him jumped but he got down a mine shaft, then went and caught a really nice Tom lion, great day :D

I didn’t know that garmin was doing map chips. I was told they’re only doing a subscription based system.

It was a great day even though we didn’t tree them. The dogs learned a ton and my young female Shy really did great! I’m gonna keep hitting that area and try to get the dogs on more cats. Do the cars in your area run far? I was talking to a buddy in California and he said the cats in his area tree fast. Usually less than 1/4 mile. These cats are running for miles here in NV.

Congrats on the lion!

I know the cat question wasn't for me but I do have some experience in that part of the country. When I was living in CA I hunted bobcats in NV (hunting with a friend who was a resident), OR, and just across the border in AZ and I would have in CA if it was legal. The cats definitely tree in all of those states though some areas they would hole up quite a bit as well. Also depended on how much pressure your dogs could put on them. A lot of times when we would get jumped and really start pouring it to them they would start cork screwing and then pop up a tree.

But the majority of cats definitely treed as long as you could put pressure on them, if not, not always but sometimes they would just trot out in front of you if you couldn't catch up to them.

Sass: It’s all good, I’m always happy to hear someone else’s opinion. Especially when they’ve got experience to back it up lol.
That’s exactly what these two did to me yesterday. I know my dogs just don’t have the experience to keep up with them yet. As soon as they started making circles they dusted my dogs.

I’ve always used garmin chips for landowners. In my area if I have a cold trail on a bobcat go more than like a mile it’s almost always a Tom on the move, once jumped most of them head for the rocks if at all possible or do a lot of 180 degree turns back on their own tracks. A lot of the bobcats I chase have been run lots of times because I don’t shoot very many so it’s fun to watch them learn how to loose the dogs with the least amount of effort, have a few little females that are hilarious to watch they almost never run, you watch the dogs trailing one direction and here she comes just leisurely walking the other way. Then they sit down and watch the dogs coming, maybe climb a juniper and when the dogs roll by jump out and walk back the other direction. Good times!! Traveled an hour and a half to only check 1 road got to the top and went to turn around and my steering busted, took all day to get my side by side off the top of the mountain gotta love cat hunting!!

Joe:
I didn’t know that Garmin was doing maps like OnX until last year.
Sorry to hear about the SxS. Hopefully it’s something cheap and easy to fix!
Thanks for the info on bobcats!

Got the chip in the mail, installed it on my Alpha 100. It works, it gives property line overlays just fine, but knowing my neighbors names I see it’s a little out of date. I can live with that, next time around I might try the garmin maps.

Try updating it if you haven’t already.

He was busy fixing broken stuff for paying customers lol busted out my snowmobile today, fired right up but it should because it only had 300 miles on it but usually not my luck. Rode a 43 mile loop through a 20k acre ranch that hasn’t been lion hunted in a few years and I didn’t even find an old track or any bobcats. I think I was the last person cat hunting in there in 2020, game absolutely everywhere.

Oh that makes sense. It’s cool that it was a simple fix though. Was it a fuse? I have heard some of those SXS’s have electric steering so if the fuse pops they lose steering.

Well at least you’re seeing game! There will be some cats in there eventually.

It was a bolt in the yoke. 80 miles on the sled now and no cats, seeing tons of game and strangely every critter I’ve seen has had horns lol . The wind blew hard all night so most of the time today I couldn’t even see my tracks from yesterday but keep trying I guess lol
