Hello, I have 3 year old redbone that runs lions and coons but has never run short tail. I am new to the area and would like to enter him just to see how he does. This is totally new terrain for him so it should be interesting. Couple questions though, 1) can you accomodate work schedule or do you just get what you get? 2)How much notice on your weekend to hunt? Thanks in advance and looking forward to it.

I would say that a dog that isnt broke off coon would have a slim chance of catching cats in that country. Or its gunna be a tired sonofagun at the end of 2 days of coon and cat catching.

In my country, if you had a dog that would run a coon, you would never run a cat!!!

Well we may see how many coon trees we will see before we see a cat!

Mark you might be surprised, can recall a weekend hunt when only one coon was caught, & if memory serves me correct it was a real whopper, at six lbs. Sometimes critters just don/t move, course there was some die hard( club member ) coon hunters that help keep the numbers down, that probably helped. And I do wonder how one could always be positive when hunting at night & seeing eyes only in some of these big dense trees if it is a coon or cat.? Would the judge have to see a body for it to count as a cat? Al

Oh my God,this is going to be fun!!

We may trash on a coon a couple times a season. Most of the time it's a hot track and trees next to the road. We'll shock 'em and Call 'em and head down the road!! :x

To the Guys that like to run coons. Go ahead and thin them out while your here! :D
I don't think JC would mind that, But be sure it's a coon!!!

I think that the "Witnesses or Judges" should carry Binos day and nite. And be willing to climb an easy tree if need be. In my experiences, to many lights and to bright of lights causes the cat not to look at the light. When looking for eyes, I like to be the only one looking!! If I can't find it in 10 min. you can turn on the spot lights.

It's hard to say what color their eyes are, because the Brightness of the light will shine back at you different colors. Most cats will flicker because of them squinting, but they will open theirs eyes wider with a dimmer light.

You may try hitting the tree with a solid limb to make it move around. I have seen cats in the tree, then never seen them again. I've also seen many fall asleep without a care in the world it seems.

Most of the cats I catch fall asleep during the trailing portion of the race.

Also,if the hunter can't get the cat to look at him. He might wait till daylight or leave a collar and his coat, go on and catch another cat then return to the 1st. cat after daylight. I think this is fair if it doesn't go past the time limit..TMO!! Notice, that I didn't ask a question. :D

I don't have a dog ready to compete with the big boys this year but next year I will. but since everybody pokes fun of my little bob tailed dogs, they should get credit for three cats for every one they tree??? just to make it fair is all

I think this is a great step to take to involve people in a good competition to continue the tradition of this great sport. One subject I would like to bring up to all the veterens of this area is to remember what it was like to be new to this sport. The failures that made you wonder if you would ever have any success. The constant shelling out of cash which was never able to be justified to the wife. lol. I cannot deny the fact that once I did finally start having success was very reserved in sharing the recipe for that success. However I do come from a state with very easily compliable laws where you can run all knids of game throughout the year and therefore had a lot more opportunity to get dogs out and learn. Since I have recently come to the northwest, I have spent quite some time trying to understand all of the laws and timing that will allow such hunting with hounds and even as an experienced houndsmen still had to make several phone calls to the game department to confirm my understandings of the most anti-hound hunting laws I have seen anywhere. Now I have seen many posts about how we need to band together as houndsmen and fight these attacks on the sport coming from the supposed vets on this site. but I am also seeing many more unanswered posts from people who want to get in this sport but don't know where to even start. I know from experience that many many many times as I was trying to learn how to run hounds and make the right corrections and understand them I was ready to give up. This was in a state with pro-hound hunting laws. It being much more difficult in a place like Oregon and Washington of course. Now we all know the expense and effort in finding the areas and places where you are successful are not something that you willingly share after all the work put in to find such places.

But since it seems that this particular event and forum is full of the best houndsman in the area, I would challenge some of them to maybe replying to some of these newcomers of the sport that are putting themselves out there and asking for any advice people are willing to offer. Just maybe it would give them the encouragement to keep at it, and that there is success with diligence and determination. Maybe even invite them to attend this event with the guide and give some pointers on tracks and things to look for. Or maybe just give them a little friendly feedback to help them see the good people that are involved in the sport.

Please understand and remember the continuing pursuit to abolish this sport by several groups. There are many interested people who really want to get into hound hunting, but just need that mentor to get them pointed in the right direction. I was lucky enough to have this and would not be hunting today without that person that went out with me and taught me so much. I am not pointing fingers, I just think there is so much opportunity to involve these people that we might grow our numbers once again and have the teeth to not only hold on to what we have left, but re-gain what has been lost. Happy and safe hunting! Joel
