That definitely sounds like a lot of action! I didn’t realize how many bears you guys have up there. Good to hear you guys aren’t having any problems with the wild K9’s!

Definitely haven’t had that much action in my country but those boys area was definitely thick with bears. I did see some wolf scat on one corner of a road but they said during lion season there was just a single wolf working through the area every couple of weeks.

Well bear season ended about an hour and a half ago hunted all day but didn’t get anything caught, was a great season. Probably time to get some stuff done around the house….but my raft hasn’t been in the water yet

. We currently have a winter weather advisory, calling for 1-15 inches depending where you live. Theres like 3 days next with lows in the mid 30’s and highs below 60 .

Right about now the humidity is so bad you have to swim through it. I thinking I might would take the snow right now too. I’d change my mind as soon as the flurries started though. Our vegetation doesn’t do snow any better than I do. It’s been really wet down here. It’s supposed to start raining again tomorrow I think. Most of our rivers are running 3/4 to almost full banks now and have been for a while. Any more rain this week will likely have them all out of banks. Tornadoes have hit really hit some of our crops hard. The rivers getting out may put on them too. On the high note, hogs will be even easier to find, just hit the high ground.

The thermometer read “melt” at 2 pm and the humidity is so bad you can swim through it. It’s like swimming under water in boiling water. It’s hot, you’re wet, and you can’t breathe.

Well I haven’t shared anything on here in a while so I figured I’d give you guys an update on my status. My goal is to be able to tree bears and cats with an all cur pack. This was our first season running bear.
My older dog Rubi (4 mtn cur) has become my check dog. She’s more hot nosed but won’t trash. She’s a good treed dog and becoming a good locater she’s doing good on hot tracks but hasn’t figured out how to line out colder tracks yet.
My younger dog Fern is almost 2 Stephen’s cur. Bear season has been a roller coaster. She was running with my buddies lead dog for the last year, however at the start of the season we caught our first bear on the ground at a den and she’s back slide ever since (until recently). For the next couple of bears after that she went but came back. Treed a little bit then stopped running them and showed very little interest at the tree. I was thinking she may end up just being a cat dog. So I decided not to force it. I still tried dropping her from time to time but she would go off and trash. She’s always been trashy but now she’s leaving bears and running trash. I focused more on trash breaking her and stopped giving her any freedoms. I kept walking her into trees and she continued to show little interest. The last bear we caught, I did the same and tied her up at the tree. We waited at the tree for 2.5 hours while our buddy who wanted to harvest the bear got unlost. About an hour in the bear started snapping and snorting. She looked up when he did this and started treeing. I cut here loose and she stayed on the tree for the next hour and a half treeing the whole time, front feet in the tree. Since then she’s back to running with my buddies lead dog but unfortunately we got out run by the last few. We think one was a big cat though because of the loops on the garmin. Dogs had it treed but then it jumped, did more loops and then lost the dogs over some cliffs. Ferns good quality is if I drop her, she’s gonna go find a track and run it, just have to get her fully trash broke now.
I picked up another Stephen’s cur named hornet from a friend in Montana. He’s a hard core old timer who runs only Stephen’s and trees 20-30 cats each winter. Hornet is 4 and I was told is super cold nosed and will flat out smoke a cat track. He has one issue though, he won’t tree. My friend gave him to me because he thought running bears might fix his lack of treeing. Well the first bear we caught, I figured I’d just walk him in and let him see it. Well he took the back track and went about 600 yards the opposite way through the nastiest country you can imagine. After we got the dogs off the bear, I hiked and got him. I only had him for like 2 days at this point so he wasn’t to sure about me yet. To make it even better Rubi came into heat the day after I got him. The next bear (same one fern finally started treeing again on) I walked hornet in on lead and chained him up at the tree. Sure enough he started treeing. Not a lot but enough. The cat race I mentioned earlier, he ran as well but stayed at the tree after it jumped (he was way behind and got there after the other dogs were long gone). Finally our last bear, I cut him with my buddies lead dog and he ran it with him. He’s fat and out of shape so he eventually fell way behind but kept plugging away on the track. The bear was a runner and crossed the road in front of us heading into no man’s land that has no roads so we caught all the dogs there before they crossed into it.
After that last running bear, it got hot and we decided to take a week off but it looks like it’s not cooling off anytime soon. I’ll probably start going up and hunting from day break till 6am or so and take advantage of the last couple of weeks of training season. I feel like we are getting close to being able to catch a bear by ourselves. We did catch one but it was a pop up off of bait and my rubi dog basically winded it way up at the top of a 100’ pine
Looking forward to fall bear and winter cat. I’ll keep you guys posted of how we do
