I was up in the mountains this weekend guiding some elk hunters. I ran into an outfitter who had a camp high on the mountain. I stopped to talk to him and just be friendly. I noticed he had a couple of nice lookin hounds tied to trees in his camp. I told him those are some gook lookin hounds what do you run with em. He said I run lion in southern NM. I told him I had hounds and ran lion here in these mountains. Then he just gave me a dirty look and said "ya but my dogs are dry ground dogs". I said thats cool mine are still learnin but I try to run dry, rain, snow whatever I can. Well he just looked at me and said " I wouldn't insult the intelligence of a good dog by showin him a track in snow and you shouldn't really call you dogs lion hounds if they can't catch on dry ground" Well I just said later and walked off. Here he is a guest in my neck of the woods and actin like a jerk. I don't understand why so many hound hunters can't have a friendly conversation without gettin all competitive. What are your thoughts on this have any of you noticed this same problem?

Rabbit, have you every noticed guys that has a car,dog,house,horse,theirs are better then what you got,that is people with low esteem, no assurance other words plain A--holes. i just ignore them and politely try to get away from them as fast as I can.

Those kinda people are everywhere,my advice is to "Live the Dream",not the nightmare.
You can only control yourself.

That's really too bad but probably more common than a guy likes to admit. I've been around a few guys like that over time and just walk away and never waste my time again on that guy. It's that mocho chit that far too many people have........

Don't believe I know of anybody down here (who actually HUNTS) that wont take advantage of a good snow.
All the TALKIN & BRAGGIN dont leave much time for HUNTIN & TRAININ !!!

I'd like to know his name too or at least what he looked like... sounds like someone I know..I showed this guy my dogs he wasn't that interested he finally looked at them and said "well maybe you can catch a coon with them"

Of course I made a couple circles with a guy that's pretty well respected that I could see saying that same thing

Ya guys I didn't get his name. I'm sure he is a good houndsmen he sure looked like he had been over the mountain. He was ridin' mules and his cowboy hat was all duct taped together can't be many like him around. See I'm not sayin he doesn't know what he is doin and don't have years of experiance behind him its just why do some of the old timers hate to see the new generation picking up this sport?

Dog on.....stuff like that gets me so pissed! I just hate jerk offs like nothin else....

I don't care how good of a hunter he is I am not impressed with duct tape.If I payed for a hunt and got there and he had duct on his hat or boots I think I would want my money back.

A few years ago I was helping guide a client for an outfitter. I came upon another outfitter stopped in the middle of the road...the sagebrush was about 6' tall so I couldn't get around....I walked up and asked him if he had found a track....he said yes...I asked if he would mind pulling up the road about 100yrds (there was a wide spot) and I would turn around and leave...He stated that he wasn't moving....I said okay...backed way up the road and turned around. The next day I cut an overnight track....turn loose on it and awhile later I hear dogs coming from behind me over a ridge... that same outfitter had turned dogs loose in the next canyon over so my dogs were ahead of his on the track. He comes flying up the road and jumps out....asks what I was doing...told him I was running a lion...he says: I bet we can catch this cat...I say well I'm planning on catching it....he says well: the fair way to do this would be for "us" to catch the cat, and then our hunters could flip to see who kills it. I couldn't help but to remember the day before so I said: No the thing you need to do is load your dogs and we will catch you later. Anyway....I hate having to have these kinds of situations happen, but they do, and I don't know what a guy can do to prevent them....I probably should have handled it different, but I only had 24 hrs to cool off

Catman, good for you. I would've done the same thing. Some hound guy's just don't get it, we are all out there trying to accomplish the same thing. some of the local guys that we don't hunt with always say this is our area, and my dad asked where do we get one of those area permits, cause we have hunted here are hole life and never got one.

This is the BS that that antis and animal rights love. They just wait for us to do ourselves in. Anybody wonder why they have the dog hunters (a minority) in their sights? Bow hunters, rifle hunters, muzzle loaders, can't even get along with hound hunters and we can't even get along among ourselves. It makes me sick! Let's just kill ourselves and what we love and not think about passing the tradition to the kids! Greed for me! Stupid people among our own ranks is what will do us in.

Seems hard to believe that people are like that but we have our fair share up here too.
There are not too many of these guys around anywhere but the few there are sure do leave an impression.

I have one of those also not to take way from your issue just I know what its like.
my brother and I just let out on a descent bobcat track and the dogs were smoking it 100 yards off the road when it recrossed the road we hadnt made it there yet but when we did we found out that some jackass let his dogs out behind ours ran up the trail as fast as they could, got to the tree before us to claim the cat, when we got there they admitted that my brother's walker was there first (she's gray hound fast on hot track) what ever Im not going to fight over a bobcat, he tried to shoot the cat emptied his gun and hit nothing so he told me to shoot it so one shot it hit the ground all the dogs wooled it and they took the cat and left later he told some one I know that it was because we were from another town 30 miles away that crap still makes me mad what an ass. all true
