I've always carried a .45 long colt and the cats come out dead without a very big hole in them. But it really depends on the minimum required caliber and cartridge length in your state and how big a gun your willin to shoot.

I don't recomend it but a 22lr works just fine. I've even heard of some people using a 22short. This should give you an idea of what it takes to kill a lion (not much). Like I said though I don't recomend these but they've worked before.

I wish our state allowed .22mag on lion. I'd prefer it. Light weight and easy to handle and adequate enough.

All I have ever used is a 22. If you place the shot right no problem what so ever.

depends where your hunting! the 22 works great for most treed lions by someone who has the experience but sometime in thick cover or big red fir trees with mistletoe and a nervous shooter things can go bad quick with a 22lr or even 22 mag. I like a little centerfire a 22-250 or .222 even up to 243 gives me a little more fuzzy feeling. But i don't care for the double lung shot myself, I like the head or neck shot so when that cat hits the ground i don't have to do much tracking and worrying about what dog will be dead or wounded. Have had a couple of those rodeo's don't much care for em.

Cal Bryant you know your stuff! I am a huge fan of the 41mag. They are a great round and very fun to shoot. We (father in law and I) load ours down quite a bit. Even funner to shoot and does the job well on deer and everything else. I have a 44mag and it hasn't gone hunting since I got my 41.

I'll go with Shorty on the 41 as well, with the proper bullets it will out penatrate the 44 mag, and alot easier to shoot.

liontracker that was just blind luck (don't mean to affend any blind people who are reading this) and ol' Big-N-Blue makes me out to be a hero. I probably couldn't do it again for nothing.

Chilcotin your exactly right! Penatration is what kills ( I know along with other things, but if you don't get to the vitals then you have nothing ) and that fun shooting will absolutly out penetrate the 44mag and sure is more pleasant to shoot. You can bet I'll have one near by at all times.
