I was wondering how many of you have heard of Obe Cory. He wrote several really good training books, and wrote a monthly in FULL Cry called Dog Talk for several years untill his untimely death from cancer around 1990 or so. Sadly Full CRY to me has never been the same. At one time there was talk of reprinting his articles in Full Cry but it never happend. The last i heard his sons were living down in Texas.

I have several of his books all excellent reading....Beartracker, Lionhounds, The locating treedogs. The cool part about his writings is the area he talks about in his books is right over the ridge from where we guide.

I bought that book "the locating treedog" just as it was coming out.
I took everything in it as biblical truth and built my budding dog habit around it. I scoured the country for the right two dogs according to Obe's directives for finding a true breeding family of dogs. I spent all kinds of money I didn't have for those two dogs. Five years later, I had people driving from three different states to try to get a pup out of those two, and now, Jcat tells me there is still some of that blood around now 25 years later.
Then, I got so much smarter than Obe. Now I disagree with him on several points. I went looking for better dogs according to my own enlightened methods. Needless to say, I have never again had dogs that paid for themselves and more, and I have never had dogs that people still today trace their dogs back to.
I wish I had never become enlightened beyond the basics outlined by Obe when I was young. Then I got Old and smart. Now, I might be young and dumb again.
As Dylan put it "I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now."
It is amazing how much history favors the great writers. Obe was a great writer, Wick is a great writer, Del Cameron is a great writer, and actually, Ben Lilly wrote about himself quite a bit. I have heard/read extremely negative things about all of these men from other hunters, and some of them that knew these folks as youngsters and helped them learn to hunt.
Yet their contribution to us in the passing on of knowledge and passion about this sport will always be treasured. Thanks to all who have shared knowledge and passion in the writing of books, articles, and here on the shade tree. Please know it is greatly appreciated. We dont need book publishers or magazine editors to accept our work here on shade tree. It's a great age in this way.
