Roy Sparks - Insight to Jackal Hunting in South Africa

Hi coyote hunters,

I enjoyed reading the various posts regarding the topic of what hounds and how. As some of you might know I hunt leopard, lynx and jackal all with the same hounds.

The leopard is predominantly for trophy hunting purposes .The jackal and lynx is our daily target and what we hunt year round ( predator control ) 5 days a week. We catch double or more the amount of jackal than we catch lynx .Jackal are more abundant so you cut their trails more frequently.

A team of hounds normally consists of at least 8 cold trailing hounds, up to 4 pressure dogs, 2 catch dogs and a bunch of terriers for underground work.

Our cold trail hounds are the type favored by the dry ground hunters in your South Western areas and our bloodlines stem from there – New Mexico and Arizona.

Our pressure hounds look almost identical to dogs I saw in pictures of Wolf hunting here at this site. I believe the guy was using Trigg Walkers. These hounds are essential to up our kill rate on jackal. Our dogs do the killing we hardly ever shoot a jackal ahead of the hounds.

The catch dogs or what the Englishmen call – Lurchers are tough Scottish Deer Hound and Fell Hound outcrosses. They have a bit of nose for a really hot track but essentially work on sight. We use them when possible to shorten the race to save the hounds for the next days hunting. They get cut in if the jackal is visible to them or if the tempo of the chase is reaching climax.

We can and have caught many jackal with just the cold trail hounds , it just takes longer.

We have caught many jackal with just pressure dogs but the scent has to really hold well and the track has to be recent. You can consistently hunt and catch jackal with only this type of hound but you have to know jackal and where you can best locate them to cut a fresh trail.

I believe if I kept a separate team for jackal keeping the above mentioned ratio of hound types this would be ideal.

Then a separate team of maybe 6-8 cold trail hounds and 2 pressure hounds as a unit for cats this would be ideal. It is what I am working toward at this time. I have 6 young cold trail hounds I will be introducing to only cats within this month as a new project and I am really looking forward to that.

As an example the best kill rate I had was 28 kills in 31 days on lynx and jackal with the mixed team as I described. The ratio of cats to jackal then was about 50/50.

We hardly have snow compared to you guys and our winters are harsh and dry. Hope this gives a bit of insight to our type of hunting here at home.

Good hunting ,

Roy Sparks – Sparks Hounds.

Thanks for posting that.
It seems by what you wrote, that currently your packs are multi purpose and now you are developing specie specific packs. If so, could you explain your reason for the packs being specific?

Hey guys,

Tried to send a mail in reply, dont know what happened - short version.

Cat true team of hounds I'll catch more cats by cutting out the jackal.More clients from abroad want lynx as trophies.

Jackal true hounds will catch more jackal by cutting out the slow trailing on cats.

The sooner I have a cat true team of hounds the sooner I can start hopefully exporting my hounds to US and South America for Bobcat, Jaguar and Puma.I also want to invite guys to send hounds over for training and putting mileage on by getting in on lots of work and kills. That makes hounds.

Thanks for your interest,

Roy Sparks.

this is just a thought not worth much but it's a bit expensive to ship hounds back and forth across the pond and there's guys training hounds here year round. I'd put my focus in guided hunts and selling hounds to other guides in Africa if you can get them to see the light. I know that gives the competition a leg up but it's probably a steadier source of income then selling hounds. although I am sure someone would buy a hound it wouldn't be many. but don't let that stop you from posting I AM SURE WE HAVE A BIG INTEREST IN WHAT N HOW YOUR GETTING IT DONE.

Out of curiousity, what are total shipping costs TO the southwest?
I believe they are in the vicinity of $1500-$2000 form the SW to SA each dog.

Gentlemen thank you for your posts and compliments.

I want to focus on the guided hunts in order to generate better income.Since authorities stiffed us on the leopard deal I got to try sell the smaller cats, now for us houndsmen its more about the trailing and the dog work so it does not matter much if its a leopard or caracal. However its a lot easier to sell a leopard high dollar hunt than a lower priced small cat hunt.

At the moment I am a bounty hunter out and out !! Does not pay well, thats the truth,I am getting paid to kill predators with my hounds so I may as well make some good hounds for some folk who cannot do it themselves. My son in law is high up in an international shipping company and I can work transportation through him.It does run around US$ 1500.00 +/_ to the US.

I can make really good Lynx or Jackal hounds for around US 4000.00, I am certain they will run your Bobcat, Coyote and Mtn Lion.

I am not going to go on pause with this one I am going to run with it and see what happens.Kills are important to develope good hounds, I dont know how much fur you guys average but we do a lot of hide stretching my side.

Back to the photo's.In the first pic at the top of the bunch, the yellow color dog is a pressure dog then two male Big Game Hounds ( BGH ), bitch cold trail hound, red white bitch pressure dog.

Next batch photo's, same bitch PD, male BGH,male PD,last pic male BGH.

The bunch of smaller skins stretched on the one picture is of lynx and jackal taken in 58 hunting days with the mixed hound teams I described in an earlier post.

Let me know what you think of the ideas I am sharing.

Regards - Roy Sparks.
