if you know there is a bear in your area before you put up a bait barrel and waste your time is there somethin you need to hang up or put out before????

i live in crossville there aint no bear down here though we have to go to eats TN or WV or WI

I used to do a bear feeding program in washington to keep the bear from peeling the young fir trees in the spring, we used pieces of beaver carcuss to bring the bear into new bait sites, if you know anyone that traps ask them for some of there skinned beaver carcuss, then chop it into thirds, and wire it to a pole long enough to hook it up over a branch on a tree next to your bait barrel. that way the cyotes cant get to it. some times a bob cat will come in and take it but it is the best thing that i have found for brining bear into a new bait site fast, you can also burn honey or suyrup and the sweet smell that puts off works ok to, but you ususal have to do it several times, i also worked for a guy that used propane bottels, they would just open the bottle a little bit and let the propane drift out. this worked ok but not as good as the beaver, fish works of to.

If i want to start a new bait, my grandfather taught me, take a lb of bacon, and a small coleman to cook or fire. simmer the bacon for about a half hour or so, his opinion was its carried by wind currents, up and down, sticking to leaves, etc. Pulls them a long way, you can have whatever at the bait itself. I've been doing it for years. if you dont feel like doing that, get a bottle of liquid smoke and take a young tree, bend it over, tie a piece of cloth with the liquid smoke on it, and let it flig back in the air, gets it higher, that works good also. LOL

I have had mixed success with frozen beaver carcasses. They seem to like fresh better. In TN you can hunt beaver noon or night year around. A walk up most any creek after dark or cruise a lake bank and you can see beavers everywhere. I just pop em with a 22 short in the head. They will do a death dive but, just wait a minute or two and they WILL pop back up. I killed over 20 one night doing this. Just shuck the hide off and sell it. Oh, and it's legal because a game warden told me I could. Just use caution around houses, even those little shorts will skip off the water. As far as "drawing" them in. If they are just passing threw you might get hit for a night or two and as soon as you leave them hungry one night they will move on. You will have much better success if you have a "perminent" resident bear.

In case you don't know how to skin a beaver. (no pun intended here)

Cut around the base of it's tail at the hair line. Ring it's wrists, split it up the middle to the teeth and go to peeling. Pop off the feet at the joints to get the hide threw the legs. It's really simple and in just a few you can have one derobed in a minute flat.

We hunt in Wisconsin where meet is not allowed however grease works the best by far. If there are bear around u wont have a problem attracting them with some good smelling bakery either. The bear can smell it from a long ways away.

Liquid smoke,spray it on the trees and plants around the bait.

we use alot of things in our baits,beaver,oats,maple syrup,mallasses,jello mix,dog food,popcorn,donuts,old bread,cookies,lots of old grease (from resturants) and so on.
We also get some anise oil and mix with water and use a spray bottle and soak down all the trees around it,works like the liquid smoke

Back when I kept up baits and started up new ones for some downstaters that I ran with, I picked up a water blaster or some are called water cannons($20) and would pickup old fry'r oil from restraunts for deep fry'n fries, fish, chicken and such, they have to pay a guy to haul away so they are more than happy to give it away, nice handy 5 gal. containers with a screw cap, full of the good stuff, and I would shoot it a good 50-60ft up into the trees/leaves, worked real good with the slightest of breeze, but it could get expensive using liquid smoke,anise, and such in these cannons though.
