Those red and white ones look like they have Harrier in them??? Really good looking hounds. They look like they can cover some ground.

Look like the old Miller strain of hounds to me from the Rodeo , New Mexico area traced back to Ben Lilly's dogs. Terrell Shelly has some similarity but not as large these dogs looked crossed on.

Gotta love those red and white dogs!

Man those are damn near identical, the only subtle differences I noticed was the amount of red or blue on the head and black on the nose.

Here is a photo from a little over two decades ago. My old hunting partner Pete and I in a winter hunting camp. that big old green Army tent was home for us about 3 months out of the year. Note these dogs although they are heavily ticked they have very similar profiles. These dogs, were 3/4 old time Giles Goswick breeding and the rest was Ray Nelson breeding from California. Many of the old strains of southwester lion dogs trace back to similar roots.

Yup, another set of good looking redticked hounds Mike. Hal Mecham has had alot of success breeding and selling those red and white dogs around here.........like I say gotta love'em or at lease most people do! These dogs go back through Mecham and further back to Milt Holt!



This hound goes back to some of that southwestern stuff as well, but crossed into my redbones which is how I like it, gotta love it!

Mr. Leonard those are fine looking hounds you sent pics of , I would love to come over sometime and see hounds hunt the snow at some point. That must be interesting. We have snow here at home through the winter off and on , nothing dramatic though. Unfortunately I have not paid much attention to changes in trailing ability of the hounds in snow. We tend to just hunt and the hounds tend to just catch the same way, not much of a difference that I've picked up on.This year I will be more purposeful and actually drive to snow to see and make observations that I can relay to you guys. This has been foolish negligence on my part admittedly. Though when the kills pay the bills you're to busy focusing on getting the critter dead than to make to many of the finer observations.

Ike if those two hounds are still with you I suggest you take good care of them or you may have to come retrieve them from my kennels here in SA. Both the Red and the Blue are beauts !! Very similar to our hounds in looks though the blue hound is leaning more in favour of a walker blue type cross to my eye - throwing more toward blue though.

When we dumb asses over here can save enough money I'd like to make a trip over with my buddy Trev Filmer and a younger colleague Richard Morgan and do a visit with you guys - a round trip tour or something like that.

when I first met Hal Meacham 31 years ago he had a ton of the red and white dogs tied out there in his yard. He also had walkers and blueticks and even black and tans but all crossed up. He had one dog that really caught my eye and he looked a lot like Roy's red and white dogs, this dogs name was Banjo. I wanted a pup out of him but Hal kept trying to talk me out of it and telling me you really want a pup out ofold Smoke or old Sage or Tinker. Well I moved on and my buddy got a pup out of Banjo and called him Joe. He turned out to be a really nice lion hound and later i was able to make a deal and get Joe for my friend Chaser and that was one of his first lion hounds way back when.


I have a letter Milt(Merlin) Holt wrote to Nevada Jim announcing his retirment from lion hunting. He started as an apprentice along with Leon Cox working for the great Jack Butler of Kanab. Milt was selliing his last dogs and several of them were direct out of Charlie Tant's Little Rounder dog. These dogs were named Gomer and Festus. I beleive Jerry Hughes in Nevada got one of them and Leon got the other. These were very instrumental as was the Joker dog who was Nance bred in making up what many call the Southern Utah strain of lion dogs. And a lot were red and white or very lightly ticked. some also came lemon and white.
