i've had a few dogs that are way gritty, but as soon as the animal is dead they don't want anything to do with it, i was wondering if any body else's dogs did this?

That's pretty much every dog I've ever owned. After the last "twitch" they are done. Coon or bear. If it falls out stone dead, they'll wool it maybe one bite/shake, there's a chance they won't even touch it. The ones I have now you couldn't make bark at a dead bear/coon. I always see pics of dogs standing around dead game baying it, never understood that.

it's experience and personality. I've had ten week old pups booger bark bear rugs that have been in the rug state for years. and a hound that has been hurt in the bay up may refuse to give up dead game. others that fight the hardest you may be able to tell to back up. and before anyone says. oh, thats not grit. it's control. if you hunt hounds enough they know when to listen. if you make them

Redwood....... Dont you have "Field Trial Dogs" How come you can get your dogs to bark bay or tree a fake Coon but not a dead one? Kind of mind boggleing to me!

I got some dogs that got a SERIOUS hatred for a bear.I unsnap them as soon as I am sure the bear isn't going to hurt them and they flat pile drive it.They will wool the shit out of it for probably a good 10 or 15 minutes after it hits the ground.In my experience the dogs that I have had that don't do it is because they are afraid of the bear.Some older experienced dogs that have been there and done that many,many times learn that the game is over and won't do it for very long.

trueblues dogs sound like mine some of them if left alone will chew a hole in a bear and start to eat others wool a bit and go lay down if they kill a cat on the ground and it takes me very long to get to them they eat the damb thing

There's a big difference in running a drag, and barking at somethin in a cage, and wooling all over a dead animal. My dogs have no problem when it's still live. Once it's dead they are ready to go again. I've ran all my dogs since they were young on drags, they know it isn't real, but they also just know it's something they do. Here lately I haven't been able to get my older ones to run them worth $ht. I never said there was anything wrong with dogs that wool dead game, or bay it. I just haven't had dogs that like to do it. Might be because they don't see much dead game.

I would have to agree with redwood...I also believe there is a huge difference between a scent trail (real or fake), caged critter and a dead animal laying motionless.

Seems to me that it is a hounds natural instinct to trail, chase and tree. Not really to eat a dead animal to pieces. I would have to say thats just a dogs personality. I personaly have one of each. My bluetick will chew on that sucker forever if I let her and my walker is done and searching for something else to chase after 30 seconds. And heck he is only 5 1/2 months. I will tell you this though even though my bluetick is thick headed and will chew forever is allowed. She will come when told and leaves the game laying there on the ground. That would probably just be my training though because i see no sense in letting a dog chew on the game like that. I want driven, diehard dogs that love to trail.I dont want game crazy dogs. I honestly don't think the truely game crazy hounds make the amazing ones. They don't tend to slow down, use they're head and grind it out real well. Just to worried about killing the game. I like my hounds to live for the trail, chase and tree, not the kill.

Intelligences is far more important than grit to me, But than again I don't hunt bears.

I noticed that my dogs that I have coon hunted alot are the first ones to back off from a dead animal. when we coon hunt its trail, tree, kill, and start hunting again. I've had 5 or six coons run across the road in front of me while hunting and the dogs kill hunt kill hunt until they have got all 5. some younger dogs you have to drag the coon back to the truck just to get the dog back in the truck.

I feel its the game, dogs personality. On bear it seems they want to get a mouth full for a few minutes, after getting chased, beat up, and finally sinking their teeth, you can see the pleasure in their eyes. I laugh the young dogs, will bay at it first, until they figure its dead. The dogs I've been around for bear, if they dont bite on a dead bear, they dont a live either. Heck even my ten year old, has to get a mouth full yet. LOL. After sinking some teeth, their attutitude even changes, and they give a little extra, wanting more, after being beat up all summer in training season. LOL

When our group dispatches a bear , Particularly with younger hounds ,we have no problem with them continuing the fight up to a point . Usually with-in 30 seconds they will stop on there own .If it goes more than that we force them to stop . Not sure if that is the fault with the hound or myself . In the context of their long term development I have not seen any long term negativity come from that .

I don't bear hunt, but I know that even though my curs are as rough as they come, that when the hogs gives his last breath or shortly there after, my dogs will let go and go find another or head to the truck for water. Even my catch dog will let go when told it's a "dead hog". I was always taught to not let them chew on the dead ones cause it causes them to try and assert dominance and can lead to fighting. Idk, just what I was always told by the fella that got me started. But I do think I would like to see my pack of hog dogs on a bear. Sounds like fun.

I had a plot redbone cross that would light up on live or dead game. He was a little crazzy in the head. He was quite a fun dog.

My dogs will eat the dead game if you let them, if they catch a cat on the ground you better get there fast if you want anything to skin. But they will leave it alone if I tell them to, and only the pups will bay at it. I have seen good dogs that are older that won't shut up around a dead bear, but not any that I have owned, that's mostly training though like everything else breeding plays a part. I have also seen good dogs that won't chew on dead game, one that comes to mind was a female that was hateful over the kill she had been worked over so much for being growly that she wouldn't touch a dead bear or cat, if other dogs were chewing on it she would just walk off because she couldn't stand not to growl at them, and knew she was going to get whipped if she did. But if you tied the other dogs up or made them leave it alone she would come over and chew on it by herself.
