What is the best wood to use for a wood dog box?
i just got a 1987 toyota and want to build a box for it its going to be the hunting truck... any help and ideas or pictures will be awesome

Any Kind of wood. Preferably cheap plywood and then take it and have Line-X Sprayed on it. It will last forever. if I get a chance I will post a pic of mine and thats what I did. If you can look up my post in the clubs section I recently made a new launch box for our UKC club for our water races. It is all sprayed in Line-X.

i used 1/2in plywood and used 2x2 to gibe you somthing to put the screws into and build some streangth into the box then i put herculiner on it it costs less than linex and a whole lot cheaper you can also role it on or sprey it if you have a compressor then i mounted a aluminum front on the box made by owens

I personaly Dont think Herculiner and Linex belong in the same sentence. Linex is put on any thickness you want. Herculiner cost about 125.00 a gallon. you could probly have your box sprayed for less than 100.00.

I like the Line X idea. It would really make a box last a loooong time. I have tried doing some fiberglass on the top and stress points to make it last longer.

Things to think about when building a box:
My doors are small, and high on the box. When dogs are striking all the dogs will charge the door trying to get out, so the door is small enough that only one dag can come through the door at a time. And they are high on the box so that it will help hold shavings in, the dogs don't kick them out as much.
Also make your doors so they are hinged on the outside edges of the door, it makes it easier. By this I mean the left door should be hinged on the left edge and latch on the right edge. Likewise the right door should be hinged on the right edge and latch on the left edge.
Think about the hinges and latches you want to use. I have found that spring loaded hinges help quite a bit. And hinges that are longer and won't jiggle open on a washer boarded road is important. Nothing worse then having a door jiggle open about the time you come around a corner in the road and see a coyote in the road, before you can react the race is on. Ugh!!!!
A center divider in the box is a nice bonus if you have dogs that don't get along when they spend hours in the box together.



This box was built for an '87 toyota, and later was used on an '01 and then an '83 and now an '89



I have other pics of the back of the box but will have to find them. It sits up so high because it is on the wheel wells so I can put equipment under the box.

Poundhound- how thick of plywood did you use? i was thinking of using 3/8 on sides and bottom and 1/2 for top...and good looking box

What part of Washington are you in? You may be close enough to take a look at it in person.

I think you are right. I think I used 3/8 sides and back and 1/2 in top and bottom.

Something I left out. Draw it out so you have minimum waste. Make it like 4x4 top and bottom or there's abouts and 2' x 4' sides or something close eliminates a lot of waste. This is only an example of measurements so you get the point, I don't remember what mine is exactly but I drew it out to cut down on waste.

The box is sitting on my porch and if you want I can send pics on my cell phone if you want, it would be quicker.

A/C plywood works good if you end up just painting it it is all conditions so it has a different kind of glue that does't de-lam or get dry rot after a season or two it's a little more expensive but not much hope this helps
