It's a lot of work, but you can make 2 or 3 gallons of this at a time, and it will last you several years. Collect pinion pitch from pinion trees. I look for trees that have a considerable amount of pitch exposed. You can plan on ruining a knife, or at least never using it on anything else. Get a pan that will never be used for anything else, cook the pitch OUTSIDE. Be very careful that the pitch doesn't get too hot - it will ignite. As the pitch gets liquified, strain ALL of the trash and debris from it. When you have the pitch clean, add vegetable oil in equal amounts to the pitch that is in the pot. At this point you have a mixture of 50% pinion pitch and 50% vegetable oil. Add some lanolin and some sort of antibiotic ( I like wound kote ), stirr it all together, let it cool, and apply it from a small can with a 3/4" or 1" brush every day. This is the basics of a recipe that Dale & Clell used. I used to use it all the time and it works very well.

Mike, It's in the shop - didn't work so well in Sweetwater, TX so I thought I should get it tuned up! Yeah, there are some times that it pays to be an old fart, huh? That recipe was sort of given to me by a guy that grew up with the Lees by the name of Jim Brooks. Justin Marks, another guy that grew up hunting with those guys told me how to " soup it up ". It works well. The pitch keeps it from coming off of the feet and the other stuff does the work.

If you just want to toughen up thier feet, spray venigar on thier pads every day for a while - works good for that.

A 50/50 mix of neosporin and preperation H works pretty good. Got that from an old bird hunter,he also would give them an asprin the first nite to relax em and let em sleep better.

Do you give that Preperation H internally ?

Just kidding I will try that one. I have a friend in the Gila that swears by bag balm.

there use to be an old man out here but thae race track that made Pinion Salve and he sold it all over. He died and I guess his business went with him. Back in my bear running days I used that and it worked good when they really got sore but to toughen them up I tried the Tuff foot and all that and I would work them up to about 10 miles a night and part of that on gravel and they got pretty tough. But vinegar is probably better than that.

I'd like to talk to that wise old man, but he is sorta right. Unless you got the indian sign on some of them old time dogs they will shred you pretty quick if you go to throwing gas on the fire. LOL!

Here is what I have found boys and girls. Leg them dogs up easy get all that damn blubber off them and then even then they are going to sore up a might on you on that first or second rock rattling run over the bluffs to put the lion or bear up. Ok give them a day or two and treat their feet and tell them they are good dogs, and then hunt them again or if you can't hunt run them a bit. Try not to slip a pad or blow a hole but if you do it ain't the end of the world. Those old dog's tongues are going to work on it more than anything else. Get the blubber off them and leg them up harder than a pine knot and then go hunting. Oh it makes a big difference. Hell I showed up in the Gila one time with a bunch of dogs I had been running on bear in Colorado so that shows it was a long time back and then on an indian reservation down here. Good greif these dogs were scarecrow thin even though they ate a full bowl of feed a day. I mean they were bad to the bone and you could see lots of bones.

Pissed some of the locals off because we were flat catching the bear and they just told everybody these bear would outrun you. Oh them 4 corners dudes must be baiting the bears! Nope no bait just strike, run em up and bite their ass till they treed. But it wasn't cus they were such wonderful bear dogs. No they were ok, but they were in shape!

A bobcat guide that I know up in Maine swears by soaking his dogs feet with Hemlock bark, he peels a bunch of bark and soaks it for about a year then soaks the dogs feet in it every night he gets in from running, he built pans big enough the dogs have to stand in while they eat.

I appreciate all the info. so far guys, but I was hoping for some suggestions of stuff that is a little more accessible.I road my dogs plenty before the season (12 miles three days a week for 2 months at least).I got no fat dogs and have absolutely no problems with pads.I run my dogs hard on bears, sometimes multiple bears in one day.My dogs hold up pretty good but after a few days of hard running they can get gooey toed and even have some raw spots where toes rub together.I was hoping that someone would have some advice on a product out there that would help dry and heal these effected areas

I had a english dog that I tried eveything on him, he would run the pads off in a couple of days. I tried about everything under the sun and the best thing I found was Kopertox.
