I am no dog jocky let me just say that right off the start. I have a walker (6 yrs) for sale that will road coon and bobs, but when asked if I would show him in the woods, hell I would love to but 1 problem theres nothing open in WA state, let alone after that damn ticket for haveing a live coon thats still being held over the top of my head. If I get caught doing something stupid its another grand on my ticket and thereforth the dog goes up. I just dont know what to do or how to get this dog sold. Thanks for listening to me rumble, Don

only suggestion i would have is video or pics of the dog. i have the same problem showing dogs out of season and trials for ppl who live clear across the country from me. so i do my best to video and take pics of the dogs and offer references from ppl who have purchased dogs from me in the past.

I think you have a couple ways to go.
#1.) Put the dog back in the kennel and wait a couple of months and then sell it when season is here.
#2.) Sell the dog with a trial period. If the buyer wants the dog let them take it and try it themselves. Put their money aside in case they don't like the dog. I would recommend getting a vet check before the people pick the dog up. If they want to return the dog they are responsible for any fuel or shipping costs. The dog would need to be returned in good physical condition as it was when it left your house. Ask your buyer what they think is a reasonable trial period and work it out.
Option #2 is a whole lot more complicated. Try to feel your buyer out to see if you think they seem to be reasonable. If you have doubts, don't sell them the dog, at least not with a trial period. You know, buy at your own risk.
I have bought and sold quite a few dogs. I have never asked to see the dog in the woods. I took the mans word for it every time I have purchased a dog. I have bought a couple dogs that didn't turn out to be all they were cracked up to be. I gave those dogs away. You win some and loose some. I am not saying I got ripped off, the dogs just didn't perform well enough to stay at my house. I have let guys take dogs on trials and never had an issue. I have had one guy want to return a dog. The dog didn't rig to his liking. But we both knew the dog wasn't a great fit for him before he took it. Both of us being reasonable people, we decided he should try the dog to see if it fit what he wanted. When he decided he didn't want it another guy bought it before it even made it back to my house. It all worked out with nobody being bad mouthed or no bad or hurt feelings. Good luck to you. Stay reasonable and don't trump up the dog. It should work out.

I hate to say it but I agree with george on the trial period with the money stuck away. I have done it many times and have had good luck with it. That is the next best thing to hunting the dog for them or maybe even better. about ten years ago I used to hunt with some guys from my area. they had a dog named whiskey. I saw whiskey tree upwards of 40 cats. My buddy ran into some financial problems and sold whiskey to me. whiskey never ever caught anything for me and I gave him away for free after paying good money for him. If we had done the trial deal, I never would have bought him and he would have ended up going to somebody who could catch with him. hope that helps.

It is good to see we can agree on something at least. Usually the guys getting the free dogs from me make out like bandits. I bet the guy that ended up with that Whiskey dog had real good luck with him. I gave a dog away one time (that I paid $1200 for) and the guy called me to tell me he was catching multiple coons every night. Said it was the best coon dog he had ever owned. I really liked the dog but he was to slow for cats. I laughed and told the guy he could send me a $1200 whenever he got around to it, but I never saw any money. Sometimes it is just nice to hear the dog found the right home.

I agree, give a trial with a written agreement. I sold a bear dog last season to a guy who needed help for his other dog. We had a written agreement. The dog did not hunt for him to his liking, as a matter of fact he told me the dog is a cull in his opinion, so I gave him his $$ back when he returned the dog. That dog has been helping me catch bears all spring and I will continue to feed him. Some dogs just might not hunt for some people or with their dogs.
