What kind of dogs do you all use for bobcat. I just joined this forum and its a great site for sure.

Walkers, Red Tick, Blue Tick, Red Bone, Black & Tan, Plott, Curr, or anything else. I have mostly walkers, a real nice redtick and some old worn out redbones. Take the advice of people in your area and look for breeding that has worked for them. Where I hunt most of the good bobcat dogs are walkers. I still like a little color in my pack if I can find it.

When I am looking for a bobcat dog, the specific breed is not as important to me as the qualities the dog posesses. I like small, fast, quiet, and sticky. I like the small dogs because they have more endurance. I like a silent dog because a bobcat down here will start running the first time it hears the dogs and mouthy dogs make for long chases on them. sticky because they like to jump and run alot out here. to each his own, but that is what I look for.

Houndnem, are you talking about cat or hog dogs? LOL

No, If I was talking about hog dogs, I would have added: gritty, and half crazy like their owners

There is a hell of a bunch of em that are exactly that. Now, I don't know if I'm talking about the dogs or the hunters

Only one kind of hound to run bobcats with. Bobcat dogs.

Now if that sounds a little weird sift thru some of the old posts and you will see why I said that. And they don't come in great big bunches, not the real ones anyway.

I agree with Mike it takes a bobcat dog. It can be any color, it's nice if it is fast on track and a good locator. Two of the best cat dogs I have ever hunted with were not fast dogs, but would never make a lose. They must be able to move a track fast any track no matter how cold. The best cat dog is two dogs. The things you need in a cat dog is hard to get in one dog. Two or more dogs is better as long as they all have something to add and do not take away from catching the cat. I feel more dogs will catch more cats this way. Tim and I run 8 to 14 dogs at a time if we can move the track we usually catch it. Treeing walkers,1/4 Julys and or 1/4Triggs. I have seen good one's in all the breeds. Dewey

JMO...........but if you can find a line of "bobcat dogs" that will do 2 things really, really, well, that being a line of dogs that will "drift" a track and a line of dogs that are good locators, that's a good place to start.

It's fairly easy to find dogs that can run good enough to put up cats (under coditions that most folks hunt in, the southwest being an exception).
It's fairly easy to find dogs that will strike a cat (under coditions most folks hunt in).

But ones that are really good at drifting bad tracks and locating accurately are a little harder to find.

Frankly, it's a never ending search.

My dogs can catch bobcats but they are versatile and not really bobcat dogs. But the ones I have had the most luck with are sitback tree dogs that can keep thier eye on the cats, and have a great nose and are smart, speed has not been a big issue but it helps.

What do you mean when you say a dog that drifts a track. I am sure it means different things to different people. You hear that term used a lot with cat dogs. I would like to know what it means to you guys and gals. Dewey

To Dad and I, DRIFTING a Track would mean Hounds who are always advancing a Track...and not in a PLODDING manner...Hounds who are going to where the Cat is headed....then telling You and the other Hounds when and where He (she or it) has smelled the Cat, then move on to find the Track in a new place...never, ever going back to tell You that here is where the Cat has been, and doing this over and over again!

Some times we have Hounds who may take a COLD Track 3/4 of a mile between Barks, but with the Garmin we can watch them DRIFT the Cats Track. They will eventually WARM the Track up to where more Hounds can Bark as well as more often....then one of the Swinging Type Hounds will usually find the Shorttail, jump him and then the Race is ON!


CKzona, back on Topic... Mr. Mike is giving you very GOOD advise...get BOBCAT Hounds if you want to be successful pursuing the Shorttail!

CJC, you said it very well on the drifting topic it has been my experiance that even a great bobcat dog will drift on a cold track to some extent and very seldom come back to double check on an area it has already passed over they just seem to magically no where the cat is heading. Thats why I have always said (exceptional) bobcat dogs are born not made! later, Andy

hey i have a 2 year old bluetick that i use for bobcats and lions the only hounds i dont prefer in walkers lol.
