Front page of the "Red Bluff Daily News" Mountain lion spotted in park. Numerous people called the local PD to report a lion in the park. PD came out and found the lion sleeping under a picnic table. They called Fish and Game who said the lion was in its natural habitat and to leave it alone. This park is in the middle of town. The nearest hills without people are about 8 miles away. This park is next to the main street, a popular restaurant, and lots of shopping. Lots of kids play at this park along with elderly people with pets. This was the middle of the day. Makes you wonder what it will take to make California Fish and Game actually act.

Just my 2 cents! The majority of citizens of the Great State of California vote to let the lions live unbothered. Cheers to the lions!

Which is why Ca. needs to get split just north of the san francisco line. the laws that affect the large mass of voters in so cal, usually only have negative consequinces on nor cal. just my o2

Its sure nice to learn that paved roads, city pools, and a kids play ground is natural habitat for the Mt. Lion. Sounds to me more like our fine fish and game officers of Red Bluff just didnt want to get up and earn there wages at 1:30 am.
And as for the splitting of the state that would be the best thing to ever happen to northern California but as all of us up here in northern California know it will never happen. We only have about 5% of the votes up here and they have the rest.

RED BLUFF – A second confirmed sighting of a mountain lion within this city’s limits in a week was reported Wednesday night by a Tehama County sheriff’s deputy, police said today.

A sheriff’s deputy told police the mountain lion was observed near Main Street and Dog Island Park around 10 p.m. The mountain lion, which did not appear injured or aggressive, was last seen walking westbound across Main Street, police said.

Officers, who have been in consultation with state Department of Fish and Game officials about the sightings, is advising the public to contact police if a mountain lion is seen by them.

No don't shoot the cats come on. So they aren't out in the wild, take some care and they'll leave us alone. We took over their habitat remember. Maybe they'll pick up a stray house cat or something. Just beware.

RED BLUFF – The third sighting of a mountain lion within this city’s limits in about a week was reported early this morning to police.

Police said officers received a report shortly before 1 a.m. of a mountain lion lying next to an amphitheater near Bidwell School. The mountain lion later got up and walked along the inner fence line of the school, police said.

Officers went to the scene, but were unable to locate the cougar, police said.

This morning’s mountain lion sighting comes after a Tehama County sheriff’s deputy reported seeing a mountain lion Wednesday night near Main Street and Dog Island Park around 10 p.m. The mountain lion, which did not appear injured or aggressive, was last seen walking westbound across Main Street, police said.

This lion is wandering around inside the city limits. The screwel mentioned is located approx 1 1/2 miles inside the city. Nothing around it but residential. Its near the government buildings. But not to worry, its in its natural habitat and kids are only part of its natural food source.

I know! Elementary school, with a walkway to the high school across the creek, and on the other side, low income apartment buildings. Seems everyone wants to leave the "kitty" there because we are impeding on its territory.

Boy it just gets better and better got to love fish and game. I hope this gets taken care of soon with school starting in a week and a half. I know if I see our town cat out and about I hope he is not in the road my brakes are just not as good as they once were......

A friend of mine there called a few days ago and told me his landlords horse was attacked and has several claw marks but is on the mend now. They live a block or 2 off the main drag there. They should be called fish, game and anties as they all lie in the same bed, what a bunch of idiots.

"A Red Bluff woman reported seeing a mountain lion in Red Bluff near Forward Park.

The woman, who was not identified, told police that she was looking out her bedroom window shortly before 9 a.m. and saw a mountain lion walking along an access road behind her residence, according to Red Bluff police.

The woman said she lives on Lassen View Drive near the park. Police checked the area for the mountain lion but were unable to find it, according to a news release."

The city has been given enough information to know that it has a mountain lion issue, councilman Jim Byrne said.

In the event that a child is mauled by the mountain lion, the city could be liable for not dealing with the problem.

When all the cats and dogs are gone, (the mountain lion) will be looking for something else for dinner, Byrne said.

City Attorney Rick Crabtree said, legally, not acting could be considered negligence on the part of the city. However, the argument would be that the city has limited control over a mountain lion.

To date, there have been 12 mountain lion sightings, although one of the reports was unfounded, Police Chief Paul Nanfito said.

The department has been working with California Department of Fish and Game to trap the mountain lion. On Tuesday, a DFG lieutenant was in Red Bluff in search of the mountain lion.

The police have been given the authority to use deadly force and kill the mountain lion if necessary, Nanfito said.

Despite numerous mountain lion sightings, a search by wildlife experts on Tuesday turned up no evidence of the animal.

Since the beginning of August, Red Bluff Police have received at least 12 reports of a mountain lion in the city park, near the Diversion Dam, near Red Bluff Union High School and throughout Red Bluff.

A pair of cubs were reportedly seen Tuesday at the corner of Adobe Road and Surrey Village.

On the same day, members of the California Department of Fish and Game and USDA Wildlife Specialists searched Red Bluff for mountain lions.

Accompanied by specially trained tracking dogs, officials visited Dog Island Park, Forward Park and Brickyard Creek.

They found nothing to substantiate the claims, according to a press release issued by Red Bluff Police Sgt. Dan Flowerdew.

At this week's City Council meeting, Police Chief Paul Nanfito confirmed that at least one mountain lion report was unfounded.

If police encounter any mountain lions, however, officers have been given the authority to use deadly force, Nanfito said.

Members of the public are advised to be aware of their surroundings, especially in creek beds and city parks with dense foliage, and to report any mountain lion sightings to the Red Bluff Police Department at 527-3131.
