Do you guys feed game meat to your dogs like elk, deer or moose? I have herd a lot oldtimers tell me if you feed them deer they will chase deer but my normal smart a() response is if you feed them corn will they chase corn? I do feed mine the carcass of the cats we get.

we give them anything we arent gonna eat our selves. i have heard the same thing about the deer meat but it dont seem to affect our dogs.

Feeding game meat (deer) to your dogs does NOT cause them to chase deer. I've been feeding game meat to my dogs for 12 years now and I have zero trash races. Its how you train your dogs off of trash that teaches them what to chase and what not to. That is a complete wise tale and anyone that believes that is nuts! Or maybe its an excuse they are using because they don't know how to train thier dogs.

Not only do we feed our dogs deer, elk and antelope scraps, but i give them the leggs to chew on hide and all. I totaly agree with fullcry. One has nothing to do with the other.

Lets see, I feed my dogs lots of table scraps and they have never run or bayed up table scraps yet. On the other hand I feed my dogs lots of pork and they have been known to run a hog now and then. On the other hand (wouldn't you like to meet a one armed economist), I also feed deer and elk scraps and except for one dog(and he is harder headed than most, plus he only does it once a year, plus he does it that one time a year regardless of what he is fed), I don't have any trouble with dogs running deer and elk.

On a more serious note, I agree 100% with Dean, except I would say that it was a complete wife's tale instead of a complete wise tale.

ben lily used to shoot deer for his dogs to eat. he caught a fair number of bear & cats.

I could not feed my dogs deer and elk and I'll bet they would still chase the bastards. so basically I agree with these other fellars, but my younger dogs aren't as trash broke as theirs. I did however notice that feeding cat carcases made my dogs have more drive.

Meat of any kind is good for the dogs- better than feeding corn. I boil up all of the deer and elk scraps and bones after I butcher them. The boiled scraps are then bagged up and frozen to be given throughout the year. The dogs love to be supplemented with the wild game. No trash problems with them. I have never fed them a cat yet, and they still seem to catch plenty of them.

I've fed game for over 30 yrs when I have it to feed to them, have had a few trash over the yrs but can't say they did so because of the food they were eatin, moreun likely was the trainin and nature of the hounds I was runnin...like Dean said..

wow fullcry, zero trash races. that's a nuber I could live with, but I don't think I'll ever see it as long as I'm runnin young dogs. I'm still feedin elk and deer scraps, it gives them good protein to recover from the trash races.

The 'usual' training methods obviously don't work.
I use a secret weapon and it does work. Just think outside the box.

to break my dogs that way I would need also an elk, a coyote, a skunk, couple pine hens, few turkeys a herd of cattle and sheep, one of every type of rodent, well you get the point. I like your thinking, but you can't just run down to I.F.A and buy a fawn. not to mention that would be illegal in most states. that's pretty sweet though.

I feed deer carcasses all winter long and I haven't much trouble with running deer. At least not enough to blame it on feeding deer carcasses. It also cuts my feed bill in half.

my dogs are as trashy as a city dump. i feed them all the squirrels i kill. i boil the squirrels, the whole thing minus the head and front legs, i debone the squirrels. cook rice in the stock and add the meat to the rice. then i mix the squirrel/rice with their regular fed. they love it. if i had a freezer, that my wife didn't have packed with stuff, i'd gather road killed deer. i get deer bones from my deer hunting buddies and give them to my dogs. a good bone will keep a dog busy and happy for a few days.

I used to talk smart and say the same things you guys say about feeding deer to my hounds. Been doing it for more than 30 years. I'm not so sure anymore.

I trap lots of pocket gophers in the summer and feed them all to my beagles. Tastes like candy if you read how they act when they get one. Those little dogs will dig up 5 acres trying to get one if they find a gopher mound.

My pen is full of spruce trees, the blackbirds love to nest in them. Soon as those little birds fall out of the nest there is a beagle waiting below for a snack. I have more than one beagle that has learned to climb spruce trees so they don't have to wait.

Last few years I have picked up lots of road killed deer in winter. I bring them home and skin them in front of the dogs. They can eat a deer in 3 or 4 days. There is nothing left but the hide and some of the bigger bones.

I've been having trouble lately breaking young dogs off deer. Shock the p**s out of them 10 times or more and they still aren't 100%. I'm a slow learner, but I don't talk like you guys anymore
