WY Mountain Lion Regulation Changes

I just read on the Wyoming Game and Fish site that pending the Governers signature the mountain lion regulations will be changed. Some of the areas that had high quotas will be changed to unlimited. A few of the year round areas are also going to be changed to unlimited. Well this is good and bad news. Good cause I can hunt certain areas year round without a quota closure, but bad new for all of us that want to keep a healthy population going here in the state and this will give trigger happy people more to kill. Guess you have to take the good with the bad.

It sounds like this will create some good areas to train dogs in.
Of all the unlimited areas I know of, hunters still can't reach harvest objectives, so I wouldn't worry too much about wiping out the population.

Ditto what Liontracker said. A case in study would be Oregon. Cougar tag's good year 'round, with an additional available also. With no hound hunting, the population's growing pretty fast.

But with WY allowing hounds, who knows.

Might grow a few more dry ground hunters in the Cowboy State.

Probably cooler tepms than AZ and UT for the traveling hound hunter.

Of course the pop is growing fast, there's no hound hunting! They can't sell enough tags year round to manage the lion population. The only thing Oregon is a case in study for is liberal stupidity!

Larry, you took the words right out of my mouth. I grew up in wyoming and still visit there most every year. The reports i get are of a healthy population and some big toms.

Well I don't know whether to jump for joy or what. I would be one of those guys that would get out before snow season. However things would not really be all that different, so you got to get out early. Still have to battle the wind. Thats the main cause of problems in my area. Like I said I am not sure whether to be happy or to frown a little. Guess I would have to give it a try.

razorb, I hunt the year round areas when they are open year round. Used to camp on the mountain in the summers training dogs and hunting. It is awesome to have the mountain to yourself as no one here usually runs year round. Benefit is area 15 will never close but you need to know the ranchers as much of it is private. Area 27 above Casper is all private also. So basically you have to know people to hunt those year round areas. Most the areas that have lots of lion are not year round areas and have a female mortality quota. Like I said you have to take the good with the bad.

Big Horn Posse,
You are right that is true. Lucky for me I used to hunt with a guy that hunted area 15 when the regular season closed. There are a lot of private in those areas. I guess we shall see what becomes of the issue. How are things in your neck of the woods?
