The good ones all cold trail silent and open moderately after the jump. They are chop mouth dogs for the most part so dont go expectin some girglin bawl. Should be a high clear mouth with a ring to it.

I need to say that I aint sayin they are all like that or even that they should be really but I'd expect the good ones to act about like I just said but there are good ones that probably act a bit different too I'm sure. If the dog is barkin "too much" I would pass on it. He aint doin what he sounds like he's doin.
Alot of running dogs have been bred to sound exciting when facts are they are everything but exciting.

It amazes me how friggin yappy some of these Julys are these days. Its like in the last 20 years they went from being fast and deadly to "sounding" like they can run. Maybe this has been happening longer than this, I dont know for sure cuz I'm a young buck but I do know they suck. LOL!
I went to the pen last year to let my kids play around and bullshit with some boys. I took my young July male dog there to just to let him (beep) off a bit. He was only in the pen I think 3 times in his life but anyhow, this story aint about him. There were two July bitches there that were dog trackin in my opinion or whatever they were doin. Anyhow, I dont think them cunts every shut their (beep) mouths for the entire time they were in there. They were the absolute biggest shit eaters I have ever seen in that pen. And.........old boy was braggin on them. I couldnt have loaded the pistol fast enough let me tell ya.

Dan, I sure enjoy your posts. You certainly know what your are talking about. Some hunters do not really understand what their dogs are doing (or not doing). I have a life long hunting friend who loves to hunt but never had the ability to determine exactly what his own dog was doing. He loved a yappy dog......thought it was wonderful...led every pack. I have never liked a mouthy dog running dog. It is many times the dog that is not saying anything that is doing most of the work. Of course they can be too silent.

Most of'em are open just like any breed, remember it is the dog itself not the breed that has the faults.

ha.. far as i know they've ALLWAYS ben like that.. there more of a speed hound.. like my grandad used to tell me "they ain't got time to bawl"

lol.. but they call it "tounging" on other dogs... alot of times when your in a pen if you hear a dog open way out of the way from the other dogs and the other dogs run to those dogs... then they shut up and run back to where they were.. then you here the 1st dogs that open way right of the other dogs running behind them.. then yea there tounging on other dogs... but some are good BUT MOST JULY HOUNDS ARNT! and i love julys there my favorite... don't get me wrong.. the ones that are good.............................. are the best! no ands if's or buts! but the problem is.. they don't have the guts to run 14 hours straight.. now true.. they don't have to most the time... cause they'll catch the yote in no time. lol.. but any time you go to the pen they don't want you to catch the yote.. they want you to run the yote/fox.. so thats why walkers do so good.. most guys are claiming/bragging on there dogs left and rite.. im going to be as honest as i can be.. when theres 30 freakin dogs running and they all sound similar.. HOW ARE YOU GOING TO TELL?LOL.. unless your cuttin them off on 4 wheelrs/other crap..... but the gps has helped alot... you have different blood lines/ traits.. but most pen hounds/fox hounds for that matter have the same traits.. now true not all but most.. but when it comes to julys.. we all breed for the same thing.. SPEED SPEED SPEED.. when we want too put guts in our dogs we make the famous cross of walkerxjuly... to give them the guts...
what blood line was your july dan?

The young male dog I was talkin bout was out of a bitch that come from Jay Black down in Arkansas. The poor old sumbitch died her about a year or so ago. I sure liked Mr. Jay. He was a hoot to talk to. The daddy to my dog was a dog named Pluto that Kenny Williams owned down around Springfield, MO. Pluto was out of Stump's Lewis and a bitch I dont recall at the moment. I seen some Lewis bred males and all of them were plenty steppy. Pluto actually gave a bit more mouth than what I like but he was in no way a babbly hound. I had a son out of him though that was and I couldnt stand that nonsense. This male dog I had that I called July though, he was about right. He werent nowhere near the best and he got kilt last winter on the road but he was sure makin a descent enough hound. I think one more year and he might have been a coyote dog, not sure bit I do believe it. I kinda got him set back a bit here and there cuz the dog could sure enough steal away from others and get one caught all by his lonesome and one two many of them and he werent really wantin it as bad as he could of but he bounced back usually.
