This should get some interesting talk! I hear alot of negativity about dog jockeys on this forum yet i don't understand it. Why are you down on dog jockeys when its your responsibility as a buyer to make sure your paying for what you expect! I think most relay what they were told the dog would do from who they bought it from so its not the jockeys fault if it don't do what he was told. Hes being a salesman for a product. How many people buy a used car without first test driving it? Or pay an exotic dancer without first seeing what your paying for?lol I have got dogs from private hunters and dog jockeys and have had about equal success with both, no matter who you get a dog from there is difference of opinion on certain details and different hunting methods. So back to the top, why are do people blame dog jockeys for their own responsibilty?

Well according to old Wiley Carroll, a dog jockey is someone who is selling dogs with defects simply to get rid of them, as he said "a man with a hole in him. The dog has a bad defect."

I think the problem with dog jockeys for the most part comes from some of the buyers they sell to. A lot of people just starting out wanna have the dog package ready to go. They purchase dogs from these guys without really knowing what to ask or what they are really looking for. They dont ask for trials, they dont ask much besides the price. They spend a pile of money and expect the dogs to perform trash free and catch them game every time out. They cant figure out why they dont catch game and why the dogs arent working. Most of the time its inexperience. Some of the time its the dogs. A lot of the time its both. These buyers get frustrated and end up slandering the guy they bought the dog(s) from.

Heres an example. There was a local dog jockey in my area that a lot of people got dogs from time to time. Myself included. He had a large kennel with many dogs. He would go down the line of kennels describing each dog, its breed, how much game its seen, how long hes had it, its possitives, negatives and its price. I have gotten 2 dogs from this man and I know many others who have as well.

A friend of mine went to his place to get a dog. He took my friend down the line of kennels and did the same as he always did. There was one dog he skipped over because he said he didnt want to sell it. He gave no discription of the dog. He simply said he didnt want to sell it and continued on down the line. My friend decided that if he didnt want to sell that particular dog it must be a great dog.

3 hours later after offering increasing dolllar ammounts to him he bought the dog. When my friend arrived at my house to show me the dog I looked at the dog and asked him the same information the dog seller tells about each dog in his kennels. He said that the seller didnt want to sell the dog but he broke him down after 3 hours and sold him the dog for 2200 dollars. I asked him what the dog breed was. I asked him how much game its seen. I asked him how long the seller had it. HE DIDNT KNOW! He simply thought that because he didnt want to sell it it must have been a great dog. Who do you blame? the dog jockey? the buyer? Its the buyers fault. He had no info on the dog. He had no trial. He asked no questions. He had no idea what the hell he was doing.

Some time later I went to that dog jockey to shoot the breeze and check out what he had in his kennel. I asked him about that dog and he said that he had the dog for 2 days before he sold it. He said he didnt have it long enough to get to know it or take it into the filed to get a feeling for it but some guy was hell bent on having it so he sold it. He asked me if I have ever seen the movie Forest gump. He said he just finished watching it with his wife and ended the conversation about that dog by saying "momma said stupid is as stupid does."
