Hey guys,
I am sorry of this has already been talked about, I must have missed the topic. Anyways what is your opinion on beagles running bobcats? It would seem to me that they would be pretty good at catching them since they naturally run circles. Just a hypothesis. I would like to know what you guys think or for those that do have them how they work out. I am thinking of throwing in my beagle with my black and tan male dog on bobcat tracks.

U will have good races & lots of good hound music.
But I dought if u will catch many.
Some of the other guys on here will tell u why.

Well, Iam headn north once it starts to cool down to run some bobs. I have one full beagle and a beagle walker cross. They run coons very well but when the race doesnt end either in water a small tree or on the ground, they are terrible locators in big timber. I run fox quite often and it seems they run alot similar to a bobcat, in my experience with this the beagles don't put as much pressure on them in a long race as other hounds so the fox will get to circlen (in most cases) and I find it to be if the fox is at 12 the dogs will usaully be at 9 or 10 on the clock. (hope that example makes sense) I can't yet say how a bob will run with this kind of pressure but I have herd of folks saying they'll circle so it sounds like a hoot. Trying to set up in a spot where the bob will cross and blast him. When they will really shine is if the race hits the thick stuff I've seen this with coons rabbit and fox, if they hit the thick patches its great to wait on the outskirts for a shot. Hope this helps, this should be interesting to hear other folks insight on this, iam very curious...

Well I live in the desert area so I need to catch them or else I might end up in the next state. It makes sense about them not putting the right pressure, beagles are interesting they have to put pressure on the rabbit just right to make it circle but not too much to make it not run one. I guess I would be waisting my time sending him out.

Would work great unless one treed. I know here in PA it is a lot more difficult to get them treed then it is out west. The guides here over the last years shoot about 80% or more on the ground. So I would think they would work great for this purpose. I just have no clue what you would do if one would tree on you. I would love to see pics of a beagle pounding the ol wood lol. I guess run a very slow treeing dog with them?

growing up we always had six to twelve beagles around the place. now for those that think they can't move a track i would beg to differ with ya. there are three different types of beagles brace, small pack, and large pack. brace dogs are the slowest and in my opinion the most worthless,the small pack beagle i guess would probably be ok for the average hunter. but when you hunt a truly good large pack beagle it has anything but lack of gas to push any thing to hole or tree, good luck getting them to tree though. but when i got to see the ones we owned suck deer, fox or coyote sent up their nose it was time to get to the truck to get them cut off. so just like anthing else it depends what kind of talent your following. take care!

Mine can move a track pretty good, they've stetched a few reds, I wont argue with you, but mosly they put the amount of pressure where they get em to circle, so I would just run em with a good tree dog in case they tree

slow and easy's right..mine are both about 17 inches and will flat out MOVE a track..only problem they're trashy little bastards and love coyotes..but owhell i guess.. i love to hear em sing!

LMAO, AZ I here ya, I have a couple 17 inch mixed up beagle/plotts, they are trashy little bastards aint they, I like to say they are just gamey dogs,lol, if you dont set them right down on the track you want them to run, they will get something else moving in a hurry,lol

Um, for best results use beagles for rabbits and treeing hounds for tree climbing game.

Your a go[ 30+] a friend in southern Oregon had a beagle that he caught 25 cats with one winter. It did not tree well but he got by and trained his walkers to hunt cats with it. We did not have a dog that could out do it on a cold track. I know of a half beagle that was a top cat dog and produced some real good pups. Beagle our some of the best track dog you can find cold nose, not bark off track and move a track fast. They seem to be like any dog that is bred heavy for trailing you lose the treeing. Dewey

U all got it right on the beagles nose.
I had one one time that could trail Jackrabbit in hot summer day on plowed field & hardly ever make a loose.
We used to run Jackrabbits at night in irrigated corn fields. What a musical race.
But the Jacks loved to run the roads & usally won the race.

sure am glad to see some guys that truly no something about them little boogers come out of the wood work. i get tired of hearing that they can't move a track and hounds push a rabbit so hard it goes under. one has to put things in perspective, no matter what kind of running gear a dog has he can't go any faster than his nose permits. and when most make the excuse that the rabbit went under ground he is really sitting in some brush laughing while mr. high powered running gear over runs his nose and goes home with out the meat!! same with our lion hounds it's not about owning the coldest nose hound , most have the ability to smell the tracks. but they have to have the excitement level that causes them to open on a tuff track, and the brains to slow the running gear down enough to make the progress that their nose allows. truth be known a real cold nosed beagle would lead a high percentage of tree hounds around like they had a ring in their nose. have fun and good luck!!
