I'd like to hear from or about any of the young houndspeople out there? youth 18 years or younger. those that dream of owning their own hounds one day. those that hunt with a friend or mentor. and those that have managed to get hounds of their own? I don't care what they hunt hounds or game but would like to hear about them. trying to see where the future of our sport is.

Hey pegleg, I live in Southern New Jersey, and hunt rabbit,coon,fox, coyote. I have a 3 year old walker beagle cross and a full beagle. I find they work better on game here because the brush is super thick and swampy. I got into hounds about 3 years ago when I got my walker beagle cross, with no intention of hunting it on anything but dove No one in my family has ever hunted with hounds, and I've had to figure EVERYTHING out the hard way. anyway, at about 4 months she was tearin up the kitty cat and the pet rabbit. And one of my grandfathers fishin buddies saw her and told me all kinds of stories about coon huntin and rabbit huntin so I thought I'd give it a whirl, and here Iam, Adicted! And this winter I'm headin up to the moutains and figure to let them go on a bobcat or mt. lion track...course I dont plan on catchin on anything lol.

I hope to one day own my pack of biggame hounds. I'v been doing alot of research on here and have a good idea of what I want. After college I would like to guide, and maybe one day open my own outfit. Oh by the way I'm 16.

that sounds good. I have to admit jersey isn't anyplace i've ever hunted. The real reason I am asking is to see what kind of road blocks or issues young hunters are running into getting started. do you have any friends who hunt with you?

There's a kid up the hill from me that runs hounds. Just turned 16 and hunts harder than most adults. Tough as nails. I've nver seen anyone who could keep up with him in the woods. Would rather chase a bear than eat. My buddy just set him up with his first wheels. His problems are typical . Dad has his own hounds so it limits the number he can have. Money for gas, insurance, and dog food. His parents are pretty good about letting him do his own thing. Good kid.

is there any chance he gets on here? or would be interested in it? I'd like to hear from ever area and ages

My name is Hailey and I am 8 years old and I go hunting with my Dad.The thing I like about it is going to the tree.And my other favorite is playing in the snow.My favorite dogs are oreo and copper.They are sweet and nice.Oreo's favorite thing is to chase a lion and roll in the snow.Copper's favorite thing is to chase a lion and to be petted.and I have a 5 year old brother and he also go's hunting with us.His favorite dogs are deisel,copper and oreo.Deisel's favorite thing is to chase alion and bark.Tanner's favorite thing is to hike,go sleding and find lions. I helped her with the spelling but she wrote all the rest. Take care and keep the young ones interested.

nice she;s the same age as my girls. I let them read it. they say hi hailey and hunting isn't just for boys! rose n tot. oh and she is very lucky to get to play in snow. we have to go on trips to play in the snow.

well i just started hunting cats last year im 15 i got my first hound pup from my brother before i even went on my first cat chase i cant hunt as much as i like to because i dont have my drivers licence but runing hounds is the funnest thing ive ever done

I bring kids out with me when I go out. My sisters(14,11) made a couple bear trees and two cat trees this summer. I am taking my cousin with me about every time he is doing his senior project on hound hunting, so does alot with the hounds(Mr. Holford on here)Both my kids made bear trees this year, my boy is 9 and my baby she is 5. My boy has made some tough bear trees that we hiked for three hours round trip and had to crawl on our stomachs in the brush. My daughter on the other hand, has made all easy trees where the bear was maybe a 50 yrd hike off the road. Always open to taking kids out with me, or any one that wants to go out.

Hey Mr. Pegleg my name is Nick. Im 18 and live in NC, Ive been coon hunting with buddy of mine that got me started for bout 5 years now and for the passed 3 years gotten into bear huntin. Ive deer hunted all my life, but dog huntin coons and bear has been a blast. Ive always wanted a dog, but couldnt. This year i graduated and the buddy of mine had a female walker that he was tryin to sell and i talked him in to lettin me have her. So now i finally got a dog and she is a good bear dog. Shes bout 80lbs huntin weight and is fast. Shes got a big blocky head, long legged, and blanket backed. Her dad was littermate to Wando River Kong, goes back to sackett, nailor and yadkin river. Hope to get a bear this season with her in its face or under the tree.

Hi there my 6 year old duaghter mercedez goes with me just about everyday durning training season in the summer she has her own dog Roxie and has probly seen more bear in the tree then most grown men she works with her dog almost everyday in the yard she sure makes her Daddy very proud She sure got my blood flowing throw her veins my grandfather got me my fisrt hound when i was 5 had a blast with old snoop
that all it took for me growing up I would have any where from 3 to 12 hounds all the time . Running coon bear cat and coyote and fox to I had one the best child hoods a kid could ask for I either hunted fished or trap just about everyday

those are some nice memories! what i would like is to hear everyones ideas for putting together a program to help young hunters get started and keep getting to the woods the coon clubs do alot to help their youngsters out. not to down play coon hunting as it is a big starting point for future biggame houndsmen but it is a bit easier then running big game with hounds. a contest of sorts is where i am leaning with a mentorship and hound related gear as prizes also. like i said any ideas and support would be appreciated .

My boy is 10 and goes with me everychance he gets. I got in trouble last year for keeping him out of school so much during bear season. He will be a houndsman when he grows up. When he was younger I worried about taking him out to much. I know of a couple hard hunters that overhunted their kids at an early age. Another guys boy lost interest when he discovered girls. Never really got back into it.

yeah like any thing push to hard and they loose interest although sometimes i think they never really had much interest in the activity in the first place and where going along just to spend time with a parent etc. I try not to push my kids in any direction more then good manners and common sense dictate. I've been to my share of exploratory activites to show my support. it does make a big difference in how it goes in the teen years though.
