bay up shy Plott - questions

Some input from those who are well familiar with the breed would be greatly appreciated.
I have been given a 2 year Plott male with some Bluetick in the heritage that is shy of a Leopard on the ground, after being swatted on all 3 of his first Leopard hunts.
Apparently he will trail and chase but as soon as the cat turns and is vocal, he pulls back to behind the handlers.
Will he recover behind a stronger pack, or is he a cull?
Both his Sire and Dam are regarded as excellent hounds.

how much fur pulling do you want on a leopard? hounds need to find a balance in holding their prey's attention and pushing it to far. he obviously pushed to hard a few times and may or may not reach a confident balance. I don't have much patience for a overly aggressive dog on mtn lion. the problems caused by this are best avoided in my opinion. I don't want one afraid to jump in if another gets pulled in but I damn sure don't want a hound that CAUSES others to get stupid and caught. perhaps that's why we call it a bay up.

what about changing the game you put it on? It sounds like it has the trailing capabilities, and speed. Would it excel on something else? Would running something else at least for a while be a good teaching tool?

You must be referring to the part about getting close enough to get swatted the first three times

thats exactly the part i'm refering to.....sounds like he wont go back for more....might be whipped out

He has now been on 2 Caracal kills and did not hesitate in the least.
I am pleased with how well he minds and hunts, and hope that after a few months hunting only Caracal his confidence on Leopard will be restored.

i have hunted plotts for twentynine years and my opinion only is if there shy or scared of the game your hunting they aint worth feedn
