Avybody else in Wi run into any bears out during cat season? One morning it was -20 and had one real good track. Saw 5 different tracks in one weekend. Any thoughts on why their out. Also how did everybody turn out we got 8 biggest was 39 lbs. My guess is DNR will give out less tags next yr.

Did not see any bear tracks around here.We got 4 cats with the biggest at 37# .We only hunted the weekends and the last 5 days of season.I think there may be some changes to the way our cat season is structured, but nothing is final yet.

We got 5. Biggest one was 43lbs. Been trying to get that one for 3 years now!!!! Finally got him. The other cats were 36, 28, 32 and 32. I got pics but don`t know how to post them???
Dairyfarmer, I agree with you that they will give out a few less tags this comming year. Sounds like everybody had a pretty good year.
Houndhead, what kind of changes did you hear for the upcomming year?
I heard that they wanted to make it kind of like our bear season??? And I also heard about quotas also??? So I don`t know what to belive.
Yea we found one bear in a den. Dogs were cold tracking a bobcat and just like that they were barking caught. Walked to the dogs and found a bear in the den. Caught the dogs put them back on the cat track and got a 36#.

I have heard that there will be different zones with a quota in each zone. They would have to change the way that the tagging and registration is done in order for that to work.

leave it to them to screw it up. They can't figure it out that without snow the cats don't get harvested. When was the last time we had this much good snow.If they would push the season back 1 month it would work out Look how messed up the bear season is ,we have more bears every year unless you listen to them. They give damage permits out to farmers but don't increase the tags available to the public. Just find out how much time and money is spent moving problem bears around.

I cut a track of a small bear yesterday in the snow.
Here, they come out of their den for a day or so, wander around some, then crawl back into the den for a while longer.

We cut big foot every day we went, except for the last week. Not sure if they decided to finally give up the ghost or what.
I was only in on one cat kill, a 30lber. Other guys I hunted with got a 32, 36,37,36, 35, 28, 29, and some others I'm sure I forgot. I can't explain it but I had the jinx, good snow, good runs but just couldn't seal the deal. A few got in log piles and others just slipped out. Same guys, same dogs, same terrain, were just crankin on them when I wasn't around. It got TOUGH to cut tracks later in the season, they were tight big time.

I think your right the kill was high we got 5 biggest was 29# we only hunted the last week of season. But I do think your right the DNR will think there is to many cats killed and limit tags!! Hope not!!

Did you get that lep out on any cats this year?

Dan
Had him in with me a few times trying to get him in on a hot cat run, but he didn't want to go to the dogs. They were just a bit too far for him to leave me and get in on the chase. We put one in a big log pile and he was all jacked up around there, but I'm sure it was because of the other dogs and not so much the cat.
Trying to kill a big cat is generally not the best training for a young dog. I'm hoping we get some new snow and then get after some smaller stubbies to get him crankin. He's showing me some good stuff though, we'll see if he can put it all together.

Well, he hasn't cured cancer yet so I'm strongly doubting the claims all you lep guys make.
Funny story about him. Well it's wasn't funny at the time and is more amusing to others than me. Anyway, I had him with one morning and it was cold -25 when I left the house. I knew we were going to be checking for a long time till it warmed up a bit, so I let him ride up front in the passenger seat. He wasn't so sure about that at first, till I tossed a few pieces of venison jerky his way.
So we check for awhile and cut a cat track. There is NOBODY out since it was so cold and it was old tracked up snow. I call my buddy over and we decided to put his dog down since she had been on a few cats before, while mine were all newbies. It was around 11 now and had made it to a whopping -10, and the track was going into the biggest section around. Put the dog down and she says NOTHING, so my buddy decided to walk with her and follow it as best he can amid the deer, rabbit, critter tracks. See if we can straighten it out, you never know the cat might be laying 200 yards off the road.
They get in there aways and she starts looping back towards the road so I pull up farther west. Get out and there is a cat track right where I stopped, but it was on the opposite side where I checked. His dog comes out half-azzed close the track but definately NOT on it and she hasn't barked one time. So I leash her up to the truck as my buddy is making his way out. The lep sees her and is barking at her, basically being an idiot.
I couldn't see a thing on my side, so I cut in the woods and make a loop. Figured I'd fiugre out where this critter slipped out from. I found it and followed it back to the road, and could barely make it out over the bank. Looked old and just plain terrible. This whole process takes 20 minutes tops. My buddy pulls up and gets his dog and we decide to get some lunch. He drives off and I go to get in the truck.
This "smart" Lep has taken a huge crap on the passenger seat and is now sitting on the drivers side. I wasn't a real happy customer. Needless to say he got fired back in the box and hasn't been up front since. I've had dozens of dogs ride up there with me through out the years, mostly pups. They've thrown up, pissed and tore stuff up, but NOT ONE has ever crapped till I got this amazingly "smart" Lep.

Maybe he just didn't like you not letting him out to play in the snow and took a dump to show you how he felt about it? haha
When I was back in colledge I had a dog that didn't like one of my room-mates. One day that dog went up the stairs and found the guys shoe and took a dump inside it. I thought it was sorta funny but my room-mate didn't see much humor it it lol.

Nolte I used to own a plott that did the same thing and from what I understand he is still doing it...notice I said
"I used to own".
There are quiet a few fellas out here that have some curs and they do very well depending on the style you like. The best one's I have seen have been the Stephens for this country but there are some other fellas I have been with that have some real nice Kemmers too.
I have only been around a few leps and the jury is still out, like anything else there is good and bad in all lines and all litters. Joe's Lep is getting it done but he is getting his butt kicked this year by his new bluetick pup
Funny thing Nolte every year I make the same mistake and always am trying something new, figuring that what I have is good but there may be something better out there thats why I let AJ talk me into a plott, what a mistake

.
I have finally come to understand that I am the only one I have to please and am tired of kicking other tires. My hounds have done it for me for as long as I have been doing this and I'm tired of trying new tires all the time.
I wish ya luck with your new adventure and with as much as you and your Pops hunt I am sure you will make a hunting dog out of her or cut your looses and stick with what you already have that works
