Got up at 2 in the morning, drove 3 hrs, found a track. we found the track on the shady side of the hill and it looked like it was only a night old track so I dumped some dogs on it and took off driving seein how many more tracks I could find. didn't make it too far and was back in a couple hrs figured I would find out where the tree was on the gps and stroll in. wrong! the dogs had only made it a mile and were still trailing headed into the roadless back country. I hiked the track out to the south slope and couldn't belive it was the same track I turned out on. it had been melted froze melted froze twice. it was hardly rcognizable as a track. I started hiking at about 9:30a.m. straight up hill for the first 3 hrs and when I topped out dogs were still trailing. my lead dog was barking treed in some nasty cliffs below me but all the rest were trailing. I decided if she was caught she would be there when I got back it was time to go break up an elk chase.(so I thought) I followed the tracks of about 20 fresh elk headed right to where these dogs had split off from my old reliable hook dog. I had no reading on the gps as usuall and I was just about to break out the tritronics when a little picture of a dog treeing came up on the gps! those young dogs had stuck with that cat for 7 hrs through elk and finally caught her. never did find out what hook had caught but was able to call her back. boy my legs are hurtin today.
