My friend and I hit a somewhat newer area today, an area we hit a couple weeks ago, hit multiple tracks but nothing runnable.
His buddy said there was an inch of fresh from 2 nights prior.
As we rolled in to town I told him, dont ever ask that guy for a report again, town was bare and the snow we did find was sporatic and 3-4 days old
My buddy said he felt lucky I said I hope so because these conditions are shit.
Long story short Mr. Eagle eye caught A SINGLE track in frozen corn snow stepping off the road at the bridge down a 10' bank into the iced timber.
He said, "Dont go fast through the puddle at the bridge or you'll wash out the only track" on the radio
I got there, looked at it and doubtfully told him to put one of his on it first, after all he found it.
Maple went down the bank and milled around, followed the river 100yards and came back.
Jamie walked in the timber with her and was gone for 15-20 mins, came back and the dog was 5 mins behind.
He couldnt find another track anywhere and we couldnt see it on the adjacent road but he was certain it wasnt there on the way in, mind you it was on the passenger side heading in...
I said I'll try one of mine on it, collared up Harlo and didnt even try pointing it out.
He bailed down the bank, milled around and looked at me.
I beeped him back up, hissed him on the one track, he got birdy, walked down the bank not 5' from where he went down the first time and walked out like he was following on a lead
Lined out a ways and started uphill, opened once and I ran back to the truck and dumped my female. She didnt get it going as quick but I headed up the road hoping to catch him cross again but missed him going off a landing 1/3rd of the way up the mountain back in the timber.
Maple was there circling and yipping a bit but there was a WHACK of fresh elk sign so I was very doubtfull.... Young dogs here !
Making a longer story shorter, Harlo was lined out running parallel and out of range.
I tore back down to the starting point, scooped up a very mad daisey (tried all she could to get away from me) up the mainline to catch up with my solo dog and eventually got the tree beep... with Maple taking up the back 7-800 yards behind who then fell in treed.
10 mins later and still hammering 300m uphill from the road, we
walked in 500 yards behind the tree and put my other 2 and jamies other one in and they fell in treed with the other 2.
I couldnt be more happy with my dogs right now.
Harlo's real grumpy, lanky female, nice colour.

Cavalry treed.
