Phoenix Zoo gets orphaned mountain lion kittens

PIERRE, S.D. - Mountain lion kittens that were orphaned during the Black Hills hunting season last fall have been moved to three zoos.

The Game, Fish and Parks Department says three kittens went to Abilene, Texas; three to Phoenix, and one to Denver.

GF&P staff went out and found the kittens after determining that adult female lions killed by hunters were nursing.

The kittens weighed from 10 to 27 pounds while being cared for at the Wildlife and Fisheries Science Department at South Dakota State University.

Sixteen female lions and three male lions were shot during the hunting season.


SIXTEEN FEMALES!! Only three males. No offense to anyone from S.D., but some of yall need glasses! Unless these were depredation killings, I can't see why there are so many dead females except for greedy hunters or guides. Now my tax dollars get to go towards taking care of a few kittens. And the zoo won't even let me use them for training!

hold on!!! all of us hounds men have made a pact that non of us will particapate in this feasco until they let us use dogs,anyway folks realy don't know and their excited so when they get a young dumb kitten to come in to a cow call,90% of all our cats have been called in,the rest were poached from the road when they cross the road,these fellas see cat with long tail they shoot,yes it is a joke ,i'll say it again one of the next world record cats will come out of SD,i have a photo from last year of tracks wide as a dollar bill,i tree them when my trashy bobcat dogs can't find bob they don't care heck if they lose bob its ok because they ran over 8 lion tracks today so they will pick one out and run it,i've seen cats that are huge by any standred,but you and i know they will never get harvested until they let us use dogs,come on there is a reason these cats made it to breeding age,their not dumb,the dumb ones come into a cow call,lol,yes sir our SD lion season ,not one of our prouder momentes
