Never seen one roll on a cat track so that is new to me. I have seen them roll on a coyote and a badger track but not a cat. Now then if he is 2 and goes in and trees with other cat dogs. Get a few cat out to him. If you are killing them that's ok, just tie him and the others back. Knock it out, and let him see it, shake it around and then take off dragging it, and make a drag for a good ways, and hang it up. Then go turn him loose only and if he goes to the tree, and trees, let the others go to him, and then let them wool it a little. After a time or two of this if he still has not intrest in running a cat track. Eliminate him from your program if you want to be a cat hunter, and get your buddy to help you find a real cat dog prospect.

Best I can offer. Cat hunting is a tuff sport, and it takes a good one to be a cat dog, and if that is what you want sentimentality must be put aside.

good luck!

I Totally agree with everything Mike said,

I would Try getting him on some coons first.. See what he does? Easier to catch and easier to get him on those.. and you can watch him run the track. If your having a problem starting a track you cAN Trap a coon and turn it loose in front of the dog.. If He can't catch a coon(and make it look easy), I think you are in for a really hard time catching a bobcat with him.

I'm not a cat hunter.. By anyones standards.. Mostly just a punching bag for the Bobcats.. They are hard to catch.. and then Hard to locate when you do catch them. If your watching someone make bobcat hunting look easy, they aren't telling you how many years of hard lessons and how many cats they didn't catch... This much i"ve learned.. (come to think about it.. that might be about all I've learned.. )

I have a dog that I think would have made a good if not excellent Cat dog, but I didn't know how to make it a cat dog wth her. Now after 5 years.. I have to give up on that Good dog, and start over with a different young Good dog..

I guess my point is even with a good dog, and several years I still couldn't make a cat dog out of it. There is a Ton of stuff that happens past Starting a track, I would be worried for you if your first problem with a two year old dog is starting a track and you want to make a Cat dog.

So don't give up.. There are more years of confusing Cat school ahead. I'm still waiting to graduate the Beginner's luck 101 class ;)

Man, I wish someone would right a book. How to train your dog to be a cat dog 101. And if there is anyone out there that knows of one let us know. Just something that could shorten the learning curve.

there are people out there that will own dogs and that is it then there is people out there that will own hounds and then there are cat dogs the only way to make a dog is simple be smarter than what u are working with

ive never bought a hound to catch an animal but to only check what i own the main female i own and catch with ive raised since a pup no other dogs to train with my pack was killed off over a to week period and was hard to start over this is what worked for me

found an area that had some cat sighn crap scrapes tracks in the snow so on took that dog out ever day day and night four three weeks with two other dogs they ran every thing under the sun and that is when tri tronics kicked in no coon no bear just cat got beat on nine diffrent races in eight days and wanted to give up roaded the dog every where she would not strike off the box then on the ninth day had a cat cross the road on the way home stopped collard up as normal and turnede her loose two hours later she treed walked in shot the cat got some hope built up hunted everey day after that and only caught twelve more that season it took another season of been beat more than cathing and just hunting been out ther before i could say i own the best dog i belive i have ever owned and its cause i did not give up she now will rig a two day old track and on bear ground and tree 90% of the game my dogs catch and she is eight years old

so guess what im sayin is the only way to make a cat dog you halft to hunt the dog a cat not a coon or a bear thats big and stinky its pulls tricks back tracks jumps trees goes in the rocks wind fall runs creeks and can be the best race a man can ever listen to with a pack of decent hounds
