I am kinda new to lion hunting and have only caught a few . I have never struck one off the rig . I am having a hard time with snow conditions this year , cant seem to hit it right this year . I have spent more time casting dogs and hiking out rds this year than ever before do to hard snow conditions . Just wondering if any one out there had a dog that would strike them if I could work on these young dogs to get them to strike them or if they dont have enough scent to travel through the air like a bear or coon .

We have rigged lions in Utah and Idaho while we were rigging for bear. It doesn't happen as much as you would think but it does happen with some good rig dogs.

If a dog will strike at all, it will (or at least should) strike any game you run it on off the truck...some animals scent just lasts longer in track form than others.

And if anyone has built a rigging platform for a sled PLEASE post it, I would think it would work but I'm not much of an inventor. It sure would make those days where the snow is too hard to see tracks and still too deep to drive in almost bearable.

that sums up my opinion on it. my riggin dogs will bark if they wind a lion, but every time they babble and I get out and find some old lion sign I don't rack that up as a rig like the ikenator.

Just my own personal experience. Here in the Northwest, you will rig way more scratches, tracks, scat than ones you can actually trail[especially on Bobcat}.If you have good rig dogs,or ones coming along, you eventually won't hardly miss a track.

Lion rigging part 3?

The dogs will strike lions. Some of the time it may be a piss or scrape but it gets the dogs down on a track that you otherwise would have driven right on by. If the dogs strike the actual lion it should be over pretty quick. JMO!

Struck this lion yesterday, my dogs are young and this year they really started striking lion, bear was a given. When the dogs bark on the sled I now get off and take a better look.

Liz,
I did build a rack for a sled once but don't have any pictures, and would almost be ashamed to show them if I did. It was something that I threw together one afternoon and used one winter, not to pretty but it worked. In my experience dogs rig a lot better off a rig or 4wheeler than a sled, because sleds ride rough, especially when the snow is so hard that you can't see tracks. And the dogs are concentrating on hanging on more than they are on hunting.

If your on snow why wouldn't you just look down and see if there are any tracks?

Because the snow is froze to hard to see tracks.

I guess that makes sense. down here when it is froze down like that it is half dirt and half snow so the dirty feet still leave a good track even when they don't sink in. does it stay frozen 24hrs a day? you would think afternoon and evening tracks would still sink a little.
