Anyone heard of a government hunter, by the name of Jay c Bruce fromcalifornia.
Hunted before 1947?
Read an article in american hunter, claiming killing 668 lions documented?
If so would guess conservitive, 1/2 or more were sub adult and Kittens!
Supposed to been more than Ben Lilly killed

I have the article.
One thing that is VERY clear in that article.
He was not a houndsman, and IMO, deserves no recognition as such. He simply saw a way to make money, and capitalized on it. He did not care about the dogs, what breed they were, or improving on them at all. He needed a paycheck, and found a way to get one.
I did, however, like the article. It sure shows how things have changed, and what was important to people then vs. now.

The book is called Cougar Killer. I found it in the local library. It is a good read. Weather or not he was a houndsmen or not he killed a lot of lions. From just reading the book he was one tough dude. I wonder how many houndsmen today would be willing to go where they went and do the things they had to do to hunt. I know I'm not tough enough. To many cokes and home cooked meals. The older I get, curling up in bed next to my wife wins out more than going out at night chasing a bunch of hounds.

I just bought the book last week. I have not had a chance to read it, but it does look pretty good. That was a different era and many predator hunters also trapped. Ralph Flowers killed a ton of bears using more than just dogs.

The book on him is excellent reading, better than the article in my opinion. Regardless of what you want to call him, he was one tough hombre who did whatever it took to get the job done and feed his family.
