Indipendant minded Blue Tick

I have a Blue dog that will go hunting good and will stay with the other dogs if things are clicking. But if things slow down it's like he gets board and will go hunting on his own. He just turned 3. Do I keep hunting him and hope he puts things together or sell him to a coon hunter that can use a dog like this?

Any ideas?

if the other dogs arent clicking then why is he doing something wrong ?this is the type dog i would try to make a start dog provided he has the tools . break him on off game when he starts that, but give him a good chance to show you what he can do on his own . if he turns out to be not what you want in a start dog only add him on jumped game if your gonna keep him .a dog must act as a pack dog if he is not a start dog. at three he should be helping you get game . jmo.

sounds like a bluetick, i agree with the above statement, i had one and have another one where if they didn't start it they lost intrest in it when the other dogs slowed down, but man if they start it its like you turned loose the fury of hell, no stop and all go, not very many bears or lions got away, my only problem with my first one is he was just to damn fast, my other dogs couldn't keep up, and he would get the bear on the run, and we would pick up him five or six canyons away either with it caught or so bruised up he couldn't walk, the one i got right now is an awesome dog, but she has some health problems, and if she isn't the first one on it, she wont even go to the other dog, in my opionion your indepent dog is usually going to be your best start dog, but that is just my opinion on the matter.

Thanks for the replies! I have not had him start any tracks as I was not sure what he was doing and a friend I bear hunt with has a couple older walker dogs and are good honest start dogs. So I waited till they would get it going and barking good and then fire him in behind them. It's interesting that a dog can/would give up a track it didn't start. I never have run into that before. I'm going to give him plenty of chances to start some tracks and see how he does. I'm feeling better about him now.

Let him hunt. I have a dog that sounds alot like that. If there is no action he will go find his own. He really doesnt care what the other dogs are doing and I love that. I've just learned that he if spilts off from the pack I have a better chance at catching two bears. I just wish I could get some more dogs to follow him. Makes me a bit nervous when I see he is running a alone. On the other hand I love finding him at the base of a tall pine with a big ol boar in the top.

That's the one thing that concerns me also with him leaving the pack. We have lot's of wolves here and they take thier share of hounds/dogs every year.
