Considering purchasing a redbone from a western state used on bear /lion . I would be using on Bear /Bobcat Any potential problems you guys see Scent issues How close would a Lion and Bobcat scent be

Bobcats are harder to cetch IMO... seems ike they leave less scent and seems it takes a better dog to cetch bobcats consistently. just my .02

I haven't been around long, but I've been around long enough and my black and tans tend to think (I think) that all pussy smells the same, be it bobcat, lion, or feral. If I had two cents, I would throw it in, but I don't, I'm broke. So maybe this opinion is worthless, but at least I got a kick out of it.

If the dogs breeding is good then there should not be any problem. All cats might smell a little different but so does everything. There is a fellow in up state new york that has some pretty good redbones. I had one given to me and it started slow so i passed the dog on to Joe Mgraff in Butte Montana. Spoke to him a couple weeks ago and dog is starting to come around pretty good. They seem to need a litttle extra time to get going but also seem to be pretty good dogs.

There will be good and bad hounds in any breed a dog really is what you make of it and how much time you spend with them in the feild, i have some red bone we run lions all the time and i know people all over that run reds and they do great i know my dog does, they are a bigger dog and some guys don't like that, but i have run lions and bobcats just with my dog by himself and he does fine. hope i helped a little.

a lot depends on the area he comes from and the "type" of lion hound he is. a drift type hound needs warm humid conditions to run bobcat. a track hound is more acceptable by desert or dry cold hunters as both conditions shrink the body scent tunnel or do away with it completely. cat density is probably the most important factor in the equation. I don't run bear with my hounds and haven't hunted a area that both are run by real good cat hounds not saying it isn't going on right now. it takes experience to shift gears and style between cats and bear. and as has been stated a lion hound isn't always a bobcat hound even if it catches a few occasionally. I've got some hounds that can run a fairly rough lion track and look ok doing it but they couldn't catch anything but the simplest pop up bobcat. my bobcat dogs are a completely different style and they do well on most lion too. they aren't the best on a really cold lion track though. I'd go hunt with the dog and see if his style and conditions he's hunted in look comparable to your needs
