The state director have issued an emergency extention for our lion hunt and season on 6 units here in utah.....as houndsmen we need to boycott this and NOT partisipate in the action of over harvesting lions on these units.... we need to stand up and say NO this is not right..... lions have been over harvested for almost 15yrs now......DO your part and DO NOT KILL lions on these units... Units maybe beaver, pavahnt, fishlake, rattlesnake, sanrafel and la salmtns, and wasatch cascade.... I will post more on this later.

The DWR has never and will never manage anything except whatever brings in the revenue. They are government

. Extending the units is a stupid idea...but the other people (not houndsmen) will be right there killing every female and kitten they can get too climb.

Remember as a kid growing up, and there was always that one fat kid, with absolutely no coordination or athletic ability. And no matter how close the pitcher got and how slow he lobbed it across the plate, the poor kid just could NOT get the bat on the ball. Or no matter how many uncontested layups you let him try, that ball was just NOT going in the basket... Remember that kid?
For awhile it would make you angry or frustrated because it was slowing the game down, then it would kind of become comical after awhile because he was so awful... but after awhile it would kind of become painful and hard to watch. And you would just start to feel sorry for the poor kid because he was so inept and incompetent.
The Utah DWR and the SFW are that poor inept little fat kid on the playground. I used to be frustrated and angry with their incompetence trying to manage our wildlife. Then after awhile it was so bad it just became comical. But the past couple of years I just kind of feel sorry for them. They are clearly in way over their heads and it's just kind of painful to watch them try and hit the ball.

there's only a small hand full of guys that can even put a lion up after march in utah.

The number of left over cats turning to quota tags is only evidence that when we get ruff conditions most don't even get out and the ones that do cant' catch. the guys catchin in bad conditions are either making their living by killin or know better than to shoot em all. the beaver will overkill and close the first snowy weekend we have and fishlake could stay open for 2 more years and never fill the 12 tags that are left up there. I think is real pathetic that they would try to extend this mess we call harvest objective, but I'm not real worried that many more lions will die because of it. to tell you the truth I haven't even ran into another lion hunter this year and I hunt nearly every unit from central utah south. cats are declining no doubt, but guys that can catch them on anything besides a fresh storm is also. thanks to b-plott for making us aware of it anyways though. it's just fueling our hatred towards dwr for their mismanagement of the cougars in this state. welcome to the jungle, harvest objective starts monday!!!!!

Can not speak for your neck of the woods but as for our part of state the last 6 weeks have been great. Lots of storms and plenty of fresh snow to cut. With these good conditions it looks like the wasatch avintaquin and nine mile units (which have been open since November) still have over half their quotas left. Hmmm imagine that

. I will be honest, as hard as it has been to cut track on fresh snow, I'll sure save my time and money when conditions suck.
Got to love the DWR

Great analogy HoundDawg! And I thought the Idaho F&G were the only ones perfecting their wildlife mis management skills. Sounds like the Utah biologists took the same 2 week online course in wildlife management.

Pete, I think they saved CrackerJack proofs of purchases and sent in for them.

houndenem i think you are on to something. at least in my neck of the woods conditions for the most part has been rougher than usual. it has been funny to watch how the number of houndsmen in early season went from sky high to hardley a sole out two months later when things got tuff. my hats off to the few who have kept chin up and hunted hard no matter what mother nature brought them. i like to look at it as an oppertunity to push the dogs to their limit and improve the pack. by hearing these numbers it looks like my dogs not the only ones getting their butt kicked by the cats! lets all hope these numbers keep looking so good. nothen better then leftovers to run next year

Unfortunately there is a bum for every chair, and the DWR just created another chair. Guarantee some dipshit houndsman will use this opportunity to become hero for the day and try to fill a tag for his buddy, neighbor, cousin, whatever. I don't worry so much about the units in southern Utah, like as been mentioned, conditions are tough and only going to get tougher. But I suspect there will be enough good snow days left on the Wasatch/Cascade unit that they'll kill a few more.
I long ago abandon the idea that houndsmen can stick together for the benefit of the sport....that despite what the DWR does that ethical houndsmen can come together to control cougar harvest for the benefit of all. It just does't happen. Everytime the DWR creates another chair, there is some bum houndsman going to sit in it. I know, we all talk the talk, but we will never walk the walk.
So pull up a seat boys, and let's kill 'em all.
BTW, anybody seen my bat??

The killing toms only is catching on in some places. There are a lot of houndsmen in the area where I live, and I can't think of one that would kill, or let someone with a tag kill anything but a tom. Over the hill from here in the cache unit I can still think of a few that have shot females that know better, and that unit just flat out sucks. Nothing like shittin in your own back yard! hopefully the trend around here will spread.
