lee's old jake?
was just wondering if anyone has any information on a hound named old jake, that was hunted with Dale Lee? I believe he was a legendary black&tan cat hound that was hunted on jaguar with the Lee brothers. thanks for any info.

Re: lee's old Jake?
that is one big claim! it would be a real pleasure to actually know which hounds are actually the top ten or twenty hounds of all time. If only a guy had the luck to hunt behind them I doubt you'd ever be satisfied with what your hunting again.

Re: lee's old jake?
I have a photo of Clell and Vincent with old Jake , several other hounds a red dog and blue dog and a big lion they caught over in an indian reservation on the west side of Arizona. the lion was one of the largest ever taken by the Lee Brothers.
Jake was a true black and tan colored dog but as with most of the hounds at that time was a crossed bred dog and many of these black and tans and high tans came from crosses of the original Lee Brother's strain crossed on the famed Little Brownie dog owned by Dub Evans of the Slash Ranch in New Mexico. Little Brownie was from a long line of their dogs that were started by crossing long eared American Black and Tan coon and fox hounds, on redbone with a dash of Texas Staate prison bloodhound added to them.
I beleive many hounds of today have far surpassed the number of lions some of these great hounds caught. With increased mobility and technology as well as a lot of snow hunting. It must be remembered that for the most part these dogs were hunted in roadless desert mountains and jungle habitat where you had to walk most of the time when you couldn't get there on a saddle animal.

Mike makes an EXCELLENT Point . Mobility and Technology have re-defined how we PURSUE critters today . Do I like it
Well the older I get I suppose the answer is YES . Still have issues with the Technology part of it .
Do I MISS the 5 mile hikes
NOT REALLY
ALL things considered I DO find it Strange when the YUUT's complain that we have a 1/2 mile DRAG to the nearest ATV
MUST be a sign of the times . WHAT ever happened to the THEORY : HARD WORK FOR JUST REWARDS

Re: lee's old jake?
I just have a lot of respect for the hounds and houndsmen of the old days. I'm sure people catch more game today, but 18 jags is pretty good for any hound to survive in such bad conditions. Jmo. Wish I could have been alive in that era, probably would have learned a lot the hard way. I wonder what the lees would have thought about the garmins.

Re: lee's old jake?
I think the Lee Brothers would have loved the Garmin system. they were old time hunters and hunted that way becasue that is the times and the areas that they hunted. Many guys even some that get on this forum hunt the same ranges and follow the same trails that Dale and Clell did and they are still doing it from the back of a mule or horse. they are using their trackers and Garmins becasue they are avaiaible today. The lee Brothers were the onles along with Ben Green who came up with the first proto type of what would become the Tri-Tronic electric trainers or E- collars. They were progressive guys and were not close minded they just hunted in a different era. Read the quote on the bottom of Benny G's signature and you will see that Clell lee was hoping for better technology all the time. LOL!
