what do you think would happen if you put some good coondogs on a fresh bobcat trail im not thinking of doing just was wondering

You will turn into a cat hunter! what is stopping you from doing it?

I don't know if you can hunt them in your state check it out and if you can it would be best with a green dog to try it in the snow first then you can help the dog on a lose and get it back on track. what do you got to lose by trying it. You will find out quick what your feeding

cant run cats in washington. You can apply for a cougar permit for some units that have hound tags. in my opinion that would be your best bet for gettin your coon dogs started on cats. oregon you can run bobs. i used to live in longview washington so i know how frustrating that place can be with all the cats around

Some dogs transition over well,most do not.Due to the locate and treeing difficulty.As far as starting them on bobcat goes,running a lion will not benifit you in the least bit due to the lion and the coon are more alike to trail than the bobcat.And that lion will allways smell like a lion-----never like a bobcat,there's no substitute for the real thing.But all that said,come down to Oregon in sept. and give it a whirl.

Most likeky what would happen with your coon dogs on cat
would be 1st time the cat marked a tree that is where u would find
your dogs treeing their heads off, on a slick tree.
Cat long gone & race blowed up.
Them super tree dogs smelled the cat on the tree & think he is there
but, this is the way cats do it.
Poor tree dogs do the best & will keep on trucken till they run out of track,
then come back & look for tree.
Lots of wanta be cat hunters have to learn this the hard way

it depends on the hound. the area also has a huge deal to do with it. this is one reason i steer clear of tree training dogs or using treehappy dogs. if a hound will bay a animal and not quit it is probably going to be there at the end of the track where you want it . with the game.

Well put Hipshooter.In western Washington and Oregon,with our tall timber a dog that is a bay dog will not neccerarily be a true locate dog[big difference between treedog or bay dog]I too had to learn this the hard way[not as hard as some others,fortunately].Some strains in some breeds shine head and shoulders above others in our conditions and terrain.

All rationale aside, trial by error or trial and succes is the only way to tell if a dog can do it or not and one race is not a trial, but many races are.

Great post as usual.

Teach your dogs what you want them to run. Although my dogs are mostly cat hunters, they have no problem catching coon. I wanted to be able to hunt with them year around.

There were even a few times they thought they could be master whitetail hunters, but I quickly changed their minds. It's all what you want your dog to hunt. Some dogs have better abilities than others, but if they have the hunting instinct, with a little work you can point them in the right direction and hunt them on the game you want.
