Are some breeds better for catching and holding coyotes? Do your hounds ever kill many coyotes before you get to them?

Catching up to them and staying there are two different things. Catching depends on two main things and one minor thing. Speed of your hound and conditions being run in from terrain to weather. The other thing is the yote, sometimes they just stop and test the waters so to speak. Where we hunt it seems the fast dogs will get the yotes to exit the swamp or "square" ( a few areas qualify as this, but not many) and head overland for other parts. In PA this means ROADS and possible trouble. Slower dogs and the yotes seem to stay in the same area of thick stuff, Swamp, etc for much longer. Also seems the more hunters around an area the more likely the yote is to try and get out of there. That makes for a very short day or a very long one depending on placement of the guys and thier shooting ability. We have some hounds that will end it if the yotes end up bayed, but as many that will join in the noise, but that's it at a bay. There are some folks that breed for a dogs baying and finishing ability- look for those folks and thier lines of hounds if that's what your looking for. Good luck, Paul Conway

Thanks for the advice Paul. I know these coyotes here havent been ran at all but i am just trying to figure out if this coyote hunting is something that can be done around here. Alot of you guys keep talking about squares or sections, are these areas very big?
