i have sleeping indian wool pants i wear cat hunting and wouldn't trade them for anything. they hold up good and keep you warm even if you fall threw the creek. For packs i really like my badlands pack for cat and bear hunting mostly but use it for other hunting to not sure what the model is but this will be its 4th or 5th bear season and it's still in decent shape.

Layers of wool! Wool socks, wool pants, wool cap and wool shirts worn under most any type of coat will help keep you warm even when wet. Wool pants collect snow and can get wet and heavy but I have never found anything that works any better. Nylon gators can help shed the moisture. Modern miracle micro fibers and denim jeans flat out don't work!

I have heard a lot of people mention wool clothes for lion hunting in the snow. I was wondering what brand do you prefer. My understanding is that not all wool is waterproof, do you know of any that is. Any info would be appriciated. I'm tired of getting soaking wet in the mountains.

I don't know of any wool that is “water proof” but the tighter the weave of the fabric the more “water resistant” it will be. I personally prefer to wear a loose nylon windbreaker jacket over the wool to help shed the snow off my shoulders. Under many cold snowy conditions, the wool will collect a thin layer of ice/snow on the outside that helps repel additional moisture. For my money, nothing beats the luxury of standing next to a roaring fire drying your clothing at the conclusion of a hunt.

I was a fan of wool for years.
When I first started trapping as a kid in the late 60's that was really all we had that was good enough to keep you warm.
I have used almost every type of garment I can find and have settled on outer gear like Mountain Hardware this has a polyester wind sheer lining that is second to none.
It is light weight and keeps you warm...
I good layed system under those outer pants and jacket make the sweat evaporate quicker.
Polar Tech is the best I have found but I am not sure it's avaliable anymore so I use thin cotten long sleeve under shirt with a medium weight cotten shirt over that and a Stormtech vest that fits not to snug.
Then a good jacket Mountain Hardwear or equivilant material...
Wool. it is good but times have arrived that have put it on the back burner.
I find you keep plenty warm without sweating when your running after a lion on foot with the newer materials, and they are made to last...they better for the price of them!!!!

Jerid,
Just move yourself down here to the desert and hunt with me! If it's too cold outside, we'll stay close to the wood stove and give those old lions a sporting chance!

You can hunt in jeans with a thermal undershirt, and a light Carhart jacket. There's no sense in changing your wardrobe to chase those long tails.

My experience mirrors Brent's, for years I clad myself from head to toe with nothing but wool for winter hunting. The recent advent of waterproof, breathable, polyester blend fabrics, however, make wool obsolete IMO. They are lighter, warmer, more wind resistant, and don't soak up water like wool. The only drawback I have found with the new polyester blends is that you can't wear them around a campfire, every little ember will leave a hole.
I still have a full set of woolies hanging in the closet, but they don't get worn much anymore.

Some of the best cold weather high activity clothing for me is Ulfrotte, Smart wool and Patagonia base layers ranging from 1-4 depending on the temps. I ditched cotton along time ago because it gets wet, stays wet and takes so long to dry out. A lot of folks say that cotten kills in the extreme cold. I just know once I start climbing and sweating I peel layers off and it always drys out really fast. Sitka gear is a great second layer as well as a lot of the stuff they sell at REI, Cabelas guide pants are great too since the have a gore tex liner.
