anyone use em?if so what breed?

Here we really dont need them being we are live trap/cage only state. I do take my Redbone with me many times when I go out to check my traps.

Yes sir! I have a 1/2 rat terrier 1/2 jack russle and she absoulutly loves it! She will cry if she dnt get to go. Smartest dog I've ever owned and talk about one hell of a squrril!

Jagd terrier. Mean as hell when it come to fur animals.

have used blue heelers, hounds and now mtn curs(Kemmers).

Curs and Terriers are what i have used. Some guys use the O'gorman dorn dogs. Anything you can train to follow a drag will work.

Patterdale's and Jack Russel's here. Better than a trapping partner.

Airedale Terrier's, I have 2 of them. Worth there weight in Gold when put to use.

What do you guys use them for? I bet they'd be helpful when your running grapples on coyotes but I can't really think of other reasons besides just having a good four legged buddy...

What do use them for on a trap line? Are they used to follow scent when using drags? Are they used for killing?

What are trapline dogs used for?
Following drags.
Finding scent posts, or creating scent posts.
Running down coyotes if they should pull out of a trap.
Any number of things, plus they are great partners.

You can use any kind of a dog. Some bloodlines work better than others.

We use cur's and mixed up hounds; handel like a yard dog and work like a houd. And to answer everyone's question just for myself, we don't use them to kill, more humane ways to do that, but in the desert SW we use drags on traps in the sand and they don't always bind close to where they were set so these dogs are great for trailin things down. For one they recover the animal and trap so financially sound, and also we do our best not to let an animal go as waisting away in a trap obviously isn't a good way to go.

hi evreone i saw this post and i just had to aske i have heard of dogs comeing in hande on the trapling i just have a few ? on useing them to find a drage do you traing them to go by the smell of the drage or the smell of the furbeare the reason i aske is around here you can set a trape for a fox and maybe get a bobcat or a coon. and also when you tlake about usen them to find a sentpost how would you go about it. i grew up hunting withe dogs mostl coon and small game so i know how to trine them withe a drage but the trapling stuff is new two me but thinks for the help everone

Where we trap it's mainly and only coyotes and the dogs know that. They trail the coyote.
If the dog is trained and can track they should track whatever is in the trap.
Scent post, the area where the coyote marks(takes a leak). A dog will do the same thing or find the coyote marking area. It's a dominate thing with canines. Just watch your dog and you'll get the education.

I agree 100% last year was my first year trapping,and it wasnt going so well. I started taking my bloodhound with me and I watched him real close. If he would concentrate on an area for any amount of time I would set a trap, same thing with marking ,If he peed I set a trap. After taking him with me I started catching fur. The more you take your dog you will notice small changes in behavior when they get the scent of an animal, the more you do it the easier it is to read your dog
