What is a dog jockey to you?

What do you consider a dog jockey? Is it a guy that sells alot of dogs weather they be good or bad or is it a guy that just gets junk for free and turns around and maks a pretty little penny off of it?
I ask this question because i am thinking about getting some dogs going every fall and winter on cats and possibly selling one maybe two. The only reason i am thinking about doing this is to help recoupe some of the expenses of hunting, and as we all know it is getting higher and higher. I have met alot of good people on here and i think i am in pretty good standing with most ( i hope ). I would hate for anyone to look at me as a dog jockey and to be honest i dont want to do this if people will look at me like a dog jockey. So i am asking your guy's opinion on this because it matters to me. Thanks

as you and i both know you hunt the hide off your dog's you get out their and make them dog's so as long as u were sellin dogs that made good dog's just not your throw away junk i dont see a problem with it. a dog jocky is a guy that gets every dog he can get his hands on and try's to sell them for 2 grand. i would not be shy to buy a started dog from you cuz i know you stand behind your word. JMO take care buddy.

anybody who gets a bunch of dogs and sells them whether they are culls or not!
I dont see anything wrong with selling started dogs on a regular basis. I was thinking about doing it myself. Some one in that position just has to stand behind the dogs that he sells.

Someone that buys dogs to sell. If you raise pups wanting one for yourself or raise and train young dogs to sell that is not a dog jockey. People will say what they say but you are the one that knows. Sticks and stones can break my bones but words can never hurt me. As long as you know does it matter what others say? Good luck with it Marshall. Dewey

Shawn, thanks buddy i appreciate it. Got your pm by the way
Glen, it is hard to stand behind your dog 100% after it leaves you. What a person does with it after it leaves your hands is out of your controll. If you stand behind a dog then how long do you stand behind it? a week? a month? a year? I would only sale a dog that a person comes and hunts with and if they like it then so be it and if not then so be it. I hunt all types of terrain from the coast to the desert, on snow and dry ground and even hunt in all day down puours ( not such a bright

). I will meet up with someone within a reasonable driving distance and hunt neutral ground. I am not adiment about this..... Its just a thought you know.

a dog jockey in my definition is someone who sells dogs under false pretenses. as long as you tell it like it is ,and the dogs back it up .the first thing i want to find out when im looking for dogs ,pups is does this man cull the old fashion way.that gives me some insight that if im buying a dog it must be doing something right to still be inhaling ,and exhaling.,it also tells you it probably wasnt bred from a bunch of culls either.if its a line the person has had .hounds arent perfect its the guy selling them like they all are worth something that i consider a jockey .jmo.

I've always wanted to be a dog jockey but can't find one that can support my weight. It would be alot quicker getting back to the truck. anyone who sells there dogs in the woods under tree isn't a dog jockey for lack of a beter term.

To me, a dog jockey is supposed to be a negative label put on a person who sells dogs on a regular or semi-regular basis. This is because at some point someone will be disappointed in a deal and the buyer, whether he is right or wrong will say that the seller sold the dog unrightfully just to make money and the "dog jockey" stamp is permenantly stamped on him as a negative connotation. I say anybody who sells a dog for money is a dog jockey, whether it is righteous or not. I know several dog jockeys I would be happy to buy a dog from. I would rather a person who is cheating people on dog deals be called a "crook" or a "crooked dog jockey". It's much simpler and accurate.

I see your point cobalt, but I've never heard a guy who sells good dogs a dog jockey. It's the guys that peddles junk or unknown dogs for big money that are jockeys.
If you hunt the dogs, find out what they do and then accurately tell that to the buyer, you will be better than 80% of the guys out there. If at the end ot the transaction you and the buyer feel you did pretty well, then you're doing it right.

Selling a dog on trial is a hard thing for me to do. I know what the dog is and want a person to hunt with me until they are happy with the dog. I will take the dog and hunt with them and there dogs to see if it works for them. To let them hunt the dog I have to know them and respect there hunting ability to turn a dog lose with them. I have seen a lot of good dogs go backwards put in a pack of trashy dogs with a person that does not know what they are doing. The person buying has to be knowledgeable and not be hard on a dog for the persons mistakes that are not the fault of the dog. Dewey

As a person with limited time and patience for pups I would like more people to be training GOOD HOUNDS not trash running culls. If a person gets a rep as a man of his word, and dosn't sell junk hounds I don't see a reason why you couldn't sell a litter of half a litter a year.In my opinion you would be doing alot of people a big favor.I like to see a young hound progress as much as anyone but it is hard work to train a GOOD hound and you really need good hounds to be able to train a good dog with.Good luck with your indeavor as a pup trainer hope you raise some gode ones

Thank you all for your valued opinions. Its good to see how other people look at things. I see a dog jockey as someone who is constantly getting dogs (that you know they could not have possibly put the time in with) from another source and turning around and making a nice chunk of change on them. In my opinion, any person that takes advantage of somebody who is anxious and ambitious to get what they think is a good or decent dog ato get going in the sport of hound hunting, is just as much of a cull as the dog usually is. Thank you all and take care.

To me a dog jockey is a person that consistantly sells dogs for a profit that they did not train. John.

two me a dog jocky is anyone that buys and sells a lot of dogs. a lot of people use the name as a bad thing it is not.... you got good ones and bad ones its all about the name you make for your self.... but just becuse some one buys a dog and hunts it then sells it dose not make them a bad person I know people that have gone though hundreds of dogs trying to find what suits them dose not mean that they where all bad dogs but it takes a lot of looking and hunting to find the traits you are looking for sometimes....

A dog jockey is a guy who goes out and finds dogs good and bad from any where he can and sells them without knowing much or anything about them for a profit.
Marshall you are an honest straight up guy who tells it like it is and I would buy a dog from you at any time on just your word, no trial... your word...
