How in the hell do you guys hunt around here? I've been staging down here as an IA recourse the past few days on fire watch, and I've been roaming around the country looking at some nice places, but I've only seen a few where I would feel comfortable finding lion sign in my neck of the woods. I like this area a lot so I'm just curious as to how you go about hunting it. I don't need your spots just wondering about the techniques.

I freecast and hunt the ridges and drainages looking for sign. That's how I do it. It works except when the dogs get trashy, then it's a where did they go moment for a little while.

I've been running around mt lemon all week cutting fireline around some of the ranger stations and other odd maintnance jobs and there's definitely more country than the average person sees. You you hunt that high up or do you hang around the cactus?

For me, it depends on what time of the year it is. My dogs can hunt longer under the shade of some ponderosas and Junipers, but in the lower elevations there are a lotta months where you just can't hunt very late in the day. The dogs over heat and you can cool them down, but after a while it's pretty fruitless. In the cooler months hunting in the lower elevations is fun. It honestly seems like there are less things to prick and snag you in the desert than there is in some high country especially with our state's overgrown mountains. Except for that damn cholla cactus, my dogs get into it like stink on shit. They're finally learning to stop trying to bite it off of them.

When I was 14 I lived outside Tucson and used to ride my horse up Mt Lemon. I love that place. Used to be lots of lion up there. :) Good times in Tucson as a kid :)
