I had a dog just like this. I got her from a guy named Dan Gardner in Alabama about 7 years ago. Great dog, registered, kind of short and stalky for a hound. Square head, medium ears, chop mouth. I actually sold her about two years ago, if I could contact the guy I sold her to, I'd try to get her back. She has A LOT of hunt to her, real gritty but would stand back and bay.

I think these are the kind you're looking for...these are like the plotts I had when I was a kid, which wasn't that long ago

These dogs look exactly like the gyp I had. I'm going to call this guy. When I saw the white on/around the mouth, I was convinced.

Those Ursus dogs might work but I don't know many people hunting hogs with them, mostly bear guys.(That is what Steve Mohr hunts)

If you want to find a hog catching plott dog, go to one of the Plott sites. Look up Smithdeal Society, Plottdogs.com, Plott World, or Plottnews. There are lots of guys there that hog hunt. Make a post on one or all of them about what you are looking for and someone will be more than happy to help you.

You will be able to find Dan Gardner on the Smithdeal for sure, or at least someone that can get you in touch with him. I have heard he has excellent hog dogs and is a great person to deal with. He is in Alabama and all he does is hog hunt. If you pm me your phone number I might be able to get you a number for him.

Reed, you're probably right about getting dogs strictly bred for hogs...just read his description of the dogs he wanted and these are the only plotts I know of that have those characteristics these days...not saying there aren't more, just don't see many of 'em anymore. I see a lot of long legged, deep chested, redbone looking dogs with brindle coloring these days that people are calling plotts.

Halfbreed...me and you need to talk to this guy. I called him and he called right back a few minutes ago, but I could not answer. I'm interested.

Fellas, I never said his dogs wouldn't work on hogs. I will tell you that his dogs produce long eared dogs though. I haven't been on his site in a while so I don't know exactly what it says but if it says they are only cur looking dogs it is not true. I have a pup right now that has long ears with a lot of his breeding in it.

Dan has great dogs like I said, but another person that I would get a hold of that has excelent hog dogs is Mike Cauley from Louisana. He is around Lake Ponchetrain(sp) I believe.

Again you can get an Ursus dog and I am sure they will work fine. If I was wanting a short eared hog dog though I would go to a hog hunter.

With that though I am not sure what the hell short or long ears have to do with any kind of game catching, weather it climbs a tree or not.

When you talk about ears on Plotts, I think of the Brandenburger issue. Any Plott bred around long eared, houndy looks I would stay away from for a hog or bear hunter.

The issue goes back a long time, but there is a difference in the "hound" bred Plotts vs. the more athletic type Plotts.

Good luck/

Reed, You are right. Dan is a great guy. I credit him for turning me onto plotts years ago and the best dog I ever had came from Dan. I have Mike Cauly puppies right now. I am very excited about my Cauley pups. I wish I had the space and money to own one of everybody's plotts. I guess I just like them all. I am really interested in this Ursus line though. I have his number and plan on calling him tomorrow. I've been trying to get sa hold of Dan for a while but I've been unsuccessful.
