how long tell you give up on a dog

Have a biggerstaff hound that turned one in may, she doesn't seem to have to drive like our others do, will drop her nose for a ways then seems to just wonder and play, even at the tree she will check things out then doesn't seem to care, can’t get her to bark at anything even in a cage right in front of her when other dogs are going nuts.
Have heard that it takes some dogs a year or two to turn things on just wondering if it’s worth the wait or is it time to move on?

Is this pup out of Steve's old line type dogs or more of a walker type? If it is out of the old line I would work with it it a bit longer and let it mature a bit before giving up on it. If it is a walker type with more of the Allen line in it i would count my losses and move on to a new prospect.

I'd giver at least 6 more months. Occasionaly one of these old line dogs will throw back a little harder to that infusion of bloodhound cross which was part of the original recipe, that Steve started with from Jeff Allen. Some of these start a bit later at times but some of them can make the best stick to the cold trail lion dogs around.
good luck!

Some fellars i know say 3 years before they quit, I like my dogs to be doing work at 3 months or acting like it. Of course some dogs are just late bloomers, I have a 2 year old that acted the same way, she'd put the nose down, but never acted interested at caged anything. Been taking her out with all my dogs bear hunting and she startin to really impress me!!!
You never know with dogs!

Work the dog with one other dog, or by itself. Most people throw a bunch of dogs together to work them and that's a lot of loud noise and confusion to throw at a young dog. When all they've known is home and it's kennel mates, some aren't even paying attention to what your wanting them to or they're scared to death. Some handle it all just fine, others mature later or in different ways. I think dogs should be given at least a year. You can't expect your preschooler to play varsity ball!

I usually give them till they're 1 1/2 years old and they better be showing me a quite a bit by then. Some strains do start a little later than others. mike
