I was hunting over above Ten Sleep the other day and the warden told me that I need to watch out for a sheep gaurdian dog that was out there. Said it killed a dog that was with some hiker and some hunter saw it eating a calf elk (presumed it killed it). I noticed signs had been put up warning people about gaurdian dogs in the area. I went somewhere else to hunt cause I figured I didn't want to deal with a dog fight with my hounds. Has anyone ever heard of these Pyrinease dogs getting overly aggressive with other dogs? I have been hunting around sheep and guard dogs for a long time and never had anything happen. I am just curious if any of you have?

I have had Anatolian Shepherds that have been very aggressive to other dogs if they are not introduced to new dogs by me. They will kill a strange dog that is in there territory. Dewey

About 7 miles across country from my house a friend of mine has 2 of these Pyrinease dogs with their goat herd to keep the coyotes off. They are behind a high fence. Every time I pass by there on the county road, if my hounds are loaded in my truck, and these dogs are pretty close to the county road, they run to the fence and follow me down the county road for about 200 yards barking and caring on. These dogs are BIG and they sure seem aggressive. I sure wouldn't want my hounds to have to tangle with'em. I don't think the hounds would have a chance. This is my only experience with them, but if I was you I'd sure be careful.

I used to have sheep, and I kept pyrineese dogs with them. If the gaurd dog is doing it's job, then ANY potential threat to the herd should be killed. There probably wouldn't be much of a dog fight, and especially if there is more than one gaurd dog. Stay clear!

Theres a place that I hunt that has five of them running around wildly, and Id have to say not only are they very aggressive but they are pretty tough too, being they can handle being hit by a toyota going 35 an hr with out flinching lol

I lived and worked on a couple sheep outfitts and had hounds and hunted around their guard dogs and never had an issue. Wow, Glad I took the warden's advice and went somewhere else. From what he said the sheep had been moved out of the area, but the guard dog was still in there. Not a good thing for hunting season on National Forest.

If the sheep have been moved out of the area and the dog is still there i have excactly the proper method to eliminate the threat.

I hunt a couple of areas where they range sheep with herders and always have a few of the big white mutts. I am horseback and my dogs will not mess with sheep but I had one of them make a run at my dogs one day. I will have to say he was a formidable looking critter but 7 normal hounds and one Bennie Wayne hound sort of turned the tables on him and he looked pretty funny hauling ass with a 45 pound walker bitch pulling white tail feathers out of him. I told the sheep owner who was grazing BLM land that I wasn't even close to the band of sheep and he better keep old Snowball in a little tighter or I was going to use him for roping practice!

One day I was beetling through town with my rottwieler in the back of the truck as usual. I noticed one of those big white dogs in another fellows pick up parked up ahead, as I approached the white dog noticed old Ezzy in the back of my truck and proceeded to completely lose his mind! He had a small chain to his collar wich the owner had slammed in the tail gate to secure him. He pulled the chain hard enough to get free, jumped out of the truck, and followed me down main street barking and jumping for all he was worth trying to get at that black dog in the box of my truck. On-coming traffic was actually having to pull over as he was taking up most of there lane throwing his tantrum! I got to the end of main street and quicky pulled over and jumped over the box to try and do SOMETHING, by this time my dog had had enough and was wanting a piece of him as well. That white dog kept trying to jump over the back of the box to get in there to fight, I reared back and booted him under the chin for all I was worth at the peak of his jump.... he flipped backwards landing really hard on his head on a patch of ice, should have about killed him but he barely missed a beat. About that time the owner showed up and got ahold of him. I hollared I'd shoot that POS dog right in his truck if he ever brought it to town again but that was the last I'd ever seen of it. That was by far the most dog aggresive K9 id ever seen!! Good thing you had a good number of hounds that day Mike!

PS I would think one of those white suckers would be good to practice a guys "steer tripping" on!!

I gurantee as big as those suckers are you better have your kack pulled down tight when he hits the end of the rope! LOL!


Benny I never knew you use to be a sheepman. By golly any potential threat to them sheep was in trouble so I reckong that's why you went out of the business! LOL!

Mike, I wish they wouldn't allow grazing on national forest to begin with. BLM is one thing but nothing worse than trying to pitch a camp and having to find a spot that doesn't have a fresh cow pie. Not too many sheep on the national forest, except on the Ten Sleep side. Still a pain in the rear when you want to get out and away from everything and find livestock all over the place. Only place to go to get away from that is the wilderness, but then you run into backpacking hippies. Will take the livestock over the hippies anyday

As far as Benny being a sheepman, well I kinda had my suspicions with him hanging around hagerman so much and thought he mentioned something about Llamas once in one of our conversations, or was it donkeys? I cannot remember, but either way I had wondered about him.

You are right I have i on good authority he has some donkeys around his place and a neighbor saw him trying to mount one not long ago. I am sure if it had not been for that gimp leg he would have got it done too. LOL!
