My parents got me one last Christmas and they are a good thing to have when you hunt alone in the back country with no phone service. You can customize the text messages to suit your needs and send messages to anyone that you put on your list. I find them very handy and can save your life if you get in a bad bind.

I have used one for years and will not go out without it. My wife also loves it as no matter where I'm at I can get an "I'm OK" message to her and a google earth link to my last location. This provides a starting point if I'm not heard from again. I also hunt alone a bunch. We packed into the Selway a couple years ago and when coming our ran into forest service who advised of a guy involved in a horse wreck breaking his back and died due to the delay in care because someone had to ride out for help. Cheap insurance and fits in your pocket.

get the new generation 1. you can type out custom texts. the old 1 you have too pre-program the texts before you leave. so for me it was either bull down or 911. couldnt say "ill be late" or "dont worry".

sdb,
Well I had it set to send a message to both my friend Wanda and to my game warden friend. The game warden said it gave him the right location, but my friend tried to figure out the location and I think she gave the dispatch the wrong numbers and they said I was in Sheridan County, but someone who told me the story they heard said it said I was in China. Guess you have to make sure the person the message goes to knows how to read the corridants right

I also checked it on google earth when I got home and it was right where I had sent the message. I have mine programed to say "Truck stuck need help" for my check in message and "Need help ASAP" for my custom message. That way if I get in a bind they will know if it is an emergency or just my truck broke down or stuck and not to worry.
