Does anybody know if there is a law about the minimum hight requirement for a dogbox in cali? Ive heard that it must be at least 4" above the rail for visiblity but have never been able to deny or confirm this.

Thats exactly what i am doing. The top of my dogbox is flush with the rail so its not visible. Ive been told by other hunters that there is a minimum hight requirement. I cant find any info on it anywhere. I doubt there is a requirement. Anybody know for sure?

Your preaching to the choir, iv lived in ca for over 30 yrs and i have no doubt that some asshole warden tried to pull that shit on someone. however since there is no law saying that you have to have a dog box in the first place i don't see how they can put regulations on the one you have. The only reason they would want it above the bed is so they can easily recognize you as a houndsman and that is considered profiling and illegal in CA.

There is no height requirement. However if you try to cram a Bloodhound into a 2 x2 box or if you have 10 dogs crammed into a box with no ventilation in 110 degree weather they could get you on animal cruelty charges. Also you have to have two mirrors that can see around it. Drivers side mirror and one other. This can be the rearview mirror or passenger side mirror. Other than that there are no size requirements. Oh if your truck gets wedged under a bridge because your dog box is too tall, well they might be able to cite you for that one.

Dont go giving them any ideas bigboarstopper, you just watch after they read this post im sure it will be on the books next yr. As for profiling being illegal in CA. I sure wish they would read that part a few times and maybe stop profiling all Bear hunters as Poachers.

My profiling comment refers to the fact that it is pretty much a given that you can be pulled over in the woods just because it appears that you MAY be in the act of hunting, that is the all the PC needed.

As was previously mentioned, there are no statutes defining the minimum dimensions for a houndsman's dogbox any more than there are for general containers for canines used for any purpose. However, that would be the least of our problems, because if there were defined sizes, it would be easy for all of us to understand and comply.
The real problem, as someone referenced, is in the animal cruelty statutes that rely less on specificity and articulated requirements, and more on the discretion of the peace officer. The biggest concern to address would be the internal temperature of the dogbox. I once had my box tested by a dogcatcher, and thankfully was within their acceptable range.
Needless to say, I never want to have my fate in their hands for any reason, which is why I built a new dogbox that has 1" of insulation around all sides (even the doors), a thermometer-powered RV fan, and a water tank.

arizonabeagle, I've never lived more than 10 miles from the place I was born. I've always heard theres something on the other side of those mountains to the east, but im not in a hurry to find out. Theres still mountains around here I havent walked yet, and there are more than a few bears to chase.
