I would be willing to guess that there is a reason they are not called "Blue Treers". Probably should be called "Blue bullet catchers".

a true austrailian bred heeler is smart enough to learn about anything. i have always had them and they go out hunting with us alot with success however as far as treeing goes 90% of the time my heelers ( aka austrilan cattle dog) run them down on the ground and kill them. i have not had one go out on a lion chase with the hounds they are to close range of a dog for that, however i have taught some to trail the path of the hounds and keep me pointed in the right direction.

the problem w/ most heelers in the US, is they are being bred to be pretty. their temperaments & working drives are getting all screwed up. a good working heeler will move cattle on big ranges like nobodys business.
compared to a good leopard dog or BMC, a good heeler is just as good, but works different.

I have a red heeler that is a hell of a squirrel dog.. All I had to do is knock a couple out to him and that was that.. He used to coon hunt with us all the time too.. Just had him and a bluetick.. Great kill dog.. He is getting a little too old for the coon hunting now..
He is the smartest dog I have ever met.. He is fine in the back of the truck until you stick your hand in my window.. Ask the gas attendants.. Never had a problem with people unless he felt I was being threatened.. He bites my boyfriend on command too

Don't know about the cow aspect of him though.. He was raised with the hounds and probably thinks he is one. Never had him around cows.....
Would I get for the purpose of hunting.. Probably not.. Would I own another one.. Yep.. People aren't brave enough to come into my kennels with a heeler on patrol

And I would probably squirrel hunt with it if it wanted to...
