Watch, read and learn.
Don't hunt with people who treat you like dirt, there are plenty of of good guys of all ages that you can learn from and you will meet some in your area after you start messing with dogs.
Look for a balanced dog that wants the get the game.
Look for a dog that will stand up to lots of use (good feet, hair and tough) so he will be able to hunt when you want to and not too sore to go half of the time.
Don't keep a dog that is not making the grade too long, you can get attached and waste years on that dog.
Don't look at the color.

so in the mean time i would really love to find a few people that wouldn't mind dragging me along with them for a few hunts just so i can get the hang of it, and know what im getting into(as soon as i move out of this damn house). I do have one black lab and i have trained him to field trial standards (According to many of the books i have read) But there is something about hounds that i can't get enough of! Oregonblues If i can get permission from my parents i would love to tag along with you one of these times! Pm me sometime a week in advance you go huntin.
