I live is durango Co and been poking around on this site for a while now. Been trying to get hounds for ever now just can aford a house here. So thinking about moving a little south so can buy a house in the next few months (if i get the new job) anyway hows the hunting/trapping.

its decent but a lot of the good stuff is private.

Forget the Farmington< Aztec area true hound hunting there is a thing of the past>
Reservations that prohibit non-memeber hunting surround the area> Oil & gas roads let crowds of hunters, and outfitters travel every avaiaible section on good snow 24 hours a day and unless you like huge crowds very few cat tracks and spending hundreds of dollars in fuel for every track you find you better head further south.

If you like to get together with 5 to 10 other trucks full of hounds and drive around drinking beer and listening to the ball game and talking back and forth with your buddies on the radio and then going home empty handed with no dog training then this is the place for you, but that isn't hunting>

Training a hound here is very difficult unless you travel a lot> Most rucks are full of dogs that have run caged trainers and can only catch a lion when the snow is good on the ground, and ideal days here are precious few unless you have every day to spend in the woods.

Sorry for the dismal report but over 28 years in the area I have seen a tremdous decline in it's hunting appeal< Durango use to be some of the best bear hunting with hounds in the country> Funny how all the good stuff seems to slip away>

Mike I dont no if you remember me but whenI first got to Durango I talked to you about hounds and You told me to spend the cash on a good dog (plan on doing just that! if I can find one anyway) Did alot of looking for tracks this year with out hounds just learning the country here. I found some big tracks and found most off the roads (I did alot of hiking and found several smoking fresh tracks) also never saw another hound hunter off the roads. Thats kinda how I plan on doing it down there (cats and bears npt sure if ill do bears but i sure would try) The more I read up on this I want to learn the dry ground game (seems like the hardest grinn). I've kept tabs on some of your posts and thats seems the only way to be able to stay on animals no matter the weather. I still would hunt Co every year as well. Is there alot of bobcats down there I kinda have a thing for them after this year!

Well I've never hunted New Mexico but I get the feeling that it must be pretty easy hound hunting there.I sold some hounds that werent worth a crap up here in New England to some guys in New Mexico.Jeez, they were rigging,catching game and looking like world beaters there !!! I couldnt get them to leave the road up here. LOL Just kidding of course.
