OR-7 is now in Lassen county...

Don’t look now, but Journey, the gray wolf formerly known as OR7, a lone male that traveled from Oregon into California last week, reportedly is now roaming in Lassen County.

It’s been 88 years since the last gray wolf (Canis lupus) in California was killed in Litchfield. Since then they have been on the California endangered species list, and gray wolves in other states have been fiercely protected. Wolves have proven themselves a resilient species, however, after nearly being extinguished by poisoning, trapping and shooting by various adversaries.

According to the California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG) website, any wild gray wolf that returns to California is protected as endangered under the Federal Endangered Species Act, administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS).

This particular gray wolf has been collared with a Global Positioning System (GPS) device that periodically transmits his location, and biologists have been able to document his travels since he was collared as an approximately one and one-half year old, 80-pound male in February 2011.

OR7, which is the code that identifies this wolf’s GPS device, is said to be a member of the so-called Imnaha pack — Oregon's oldest and largest. Wolves were re-established in Oregon in 1999, and there is evidence they are spreading across the Western states, possibly to start new packs. Other wolves have been reportedly seen near Walla Walla, Wash., and Pendleton, Ore.

The California Farm Bureau (CFB) has been watching the gray wolf’s advance very closely and dreading the likely clash between wolf and livestock. Its a matter of how big their numbers get, and how aggressive the wolves become, that determines how much of a problem it could be for ranchers in Lassen County.

According to Karen Kovacs, Wildlife Program Manager with the Northern Region Fish and Game Office in Redding, the four primary areas of concern regarding the reintroduction of gray wolves in our area are public safety, livestock detriment, big game population and the wellbeing of OR7.

Historically there have been instances where gray wolf predation has contributed to declines in deer and elk populations, however in most cases predation has had little effect, according to CDFG.

In a press release posted on CDFG website on Dec. 29, 2011, they explain “some gray wolves have killed livestock — mostly cattle and sheep — while others rely entirely on wild prey. In other western states the impact of depredation on livestock has been small, less than predation by coyotes and mountain lions, although the effect on an individual livestock producer can be important, particularly when sheep are killed.”

The press release continues to denounce concerns about human safety as “largely based on folklore and are unsubstantiated in North America. In recent years there was one human mortality in Canada caused either by wolves or bears, and one confirmed human mortality in Alaska by wolves. Based on experience from states where substantial wolf populations now exist, wolves pose little risk to humans.”

However, the CDFG does recommend people never approach a wolf, or otherwise tamper with or feed a wolf. Kovacs said to call the NRCFG Redding office at 530-225-2300 to report a sighting. She said to include the date and location of the sighting and take pictures (from a safe distance) of the animal and/or its footprints, if at all possible.

For more information you are invited to visit the Lassen County Board of Supervisors meeting at 9:30 am on Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 707 Nevada St. in Susanville, where Kovacs will be presenting information about OR7 and the reintroduction of gray wolves in California.

If you can’t make the meeting, find information about OR7 and other gray wolves at dfg.ca.gov or dfw.state.or.us (search: wolf).

Predation has little effect huh.. It just kills me that they cannot admit the damage these things have done on the elk numbers.. And how easy it is for people to look up the facts before they pick a side (oh yippee a wolf.. don't pick on the poor little wolf).. It makes me want to grab people by the throat and shake them..

O.K., maybe somone is making a bad choice in language here? According to everything I have ever read and heard from CADFG up to this point there are no plans for 'reintroduction' of wolves. Supposedly they only have plans to manage the wolves that show up on their own.
SO...did someone just step on their weenie? Have they just been blowing smoke up our ass and telling us one thing while the plans are really to let some loose on purpose?
I guess that remains to be seen...
I hope as many people as possible can make it to the meeting.
We might have to call bullshit on this operation.

Yes, I agree Melanie especially in this state that has spent SO MUCH MONEY bringing back several endangered and threatened large ungulates...guess we'll just feed them to the wolves. I also HATE how the problem of dog kills is NEVER discussed. Oh it's just a dog...and you shouldn't have let 'it' get eaten by the wolves you bad person.

These recent quotes from D.F.G. are very conflicting to those just a week or so ago; the P.R. officials from that once great department said that there was no plan nor an intention to have a plan for re introduction of the wolf into California. And now what I am seeing today is that there is a meeting planned about possible re introduction? Hmmm,... it makes no sense, I guess, except to those that have no sense? Anyway it's a good thing that we are going to be getting a bit of snow this weekend, finally some good tracking weather, a little moisture in that dry, dry ground. It oughta be an excellent time to get out with your dogs , or to just get out and see some tracks, maybe even those of that silly wolf, if you happen to live close to Lassen county. And I guess that if you luck out and see that wolf, the choice will be yours, but seeing what direction this all is heading, I think the choice may be clear.

I hope ya'll took the time to see the "Crying Wolf" video Terry L. Zink posted in this section. This situation isn't about reintroduction of the wolves!!! It never has been. It's about Federal control and their agenda!!!

That wolf coming here has set the stage for one of the most epic animal rights battles any of us have ever seen. CA has more liberals, tree huggers and animal rights activist than anywhere, and i hope no one thinks for a second that their not doing everything they can to protect "journey".
The wolves and humans will conflict more in ca than any other western state in the US. The reason why is simple there's a whole lot more people in CA. Look how much attention wolves have drawn from other states like Montana Idaho and Oregon
Montana has about 6 people per sq mile , Idaho has about 18 people per sq mile, Oregon has about 39 people per sq mile and California weighs in at about 235 people per sq mile (and that number would probably be much higher if they counted all the illegals). My point is Ca has a population of about 38 million people , so wolves will have much more human contact here , and all the problems associated with them will multiply.
So in conclusion i would like to say...
HEY OREGON DFW COME GET YOUR F@#$*&G WOLF BACK

If you think that OR7 walked from Imnaha to California you are as gullible as the F&G thinks are.

I am not arguing the fact that the wolf did or did not make it all the way south on its own locomotion, but one does have to think back to the famed case of the planting of Lynx hairs in oregon a while back.... just something to think of. Wolves, like many large predators can and will travel large distances to find prey, mates, and new home range. In a perfect world, one without large population centers, one without the stresses of modern society , I see no problem with wolves being here, but California is a far cry from that, so saying all that I think it is selfish of those who want wolves back in California, (would you want to be a wolf in a ecosystem where you are constantly monitored and watched?).

I was at the ISE show in Sacramento today and F&G had a booth set up and was answering questions. I was directed to a biologist who assured me that there were no plans of re-introduction of wolves in Ca. but if they wandered in and established then they will be managed in some form. I also asked about the conspiracy theory of this wolf not just "wandering" in and she said that was absolutely not true. She brought up a point that I've heard before that California doesn't really have the feed to sustain wolves and she doubted that a large pack would ever reside here because of that and I tend to agree with her. She stated that at this time there are basically no management plans in place and nobody at F&G is to excited at a lone wolf that they don't really expect to stay. She did say that they are fielding lots of calls from ranchers which is understandable. She was extremely knowledgable, helpful and seemed sincere. Thought I'd pass it along, take it for what it is.
